VM not pinging on ESX

Hello All,

I have two VM's under the vLAN - 9. This vLAN is mapped to all the ESX host in the cluster. But there are two ESX in the cluster, when I move these VM's those ESX, the VM's stops pinging.

There has been no configuration changes made recently on any of the ESX hosts.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Nick

the vms are probably able to ping each other when they are on the same host correcT?

cehck your nic for the vswitch for the virtual machine port group.

check that the virutal machine port group is still set for vlan9

I have checked the vSwitch and Port goups settings. The vLAN9 is correctly assigned.

Network team has also confirmed that those ESX host are configured correctly to see this vLAN.

Ive seen nics where it shows connected on the physical switch but on the host it isnt

Go to the Configuration - Networking on the affected hosts and check the CDP info on each of the vmnics (click the balloon icon) for the vSwitch used for VLAN 9.

Are they able to see the physical switch info, and does it report similar info as the correctly functioning hosts?

Are all uplinks showing they are up?

Can you ping VLAN - 9 gateway?

Your can also use traceroute command for find the destination route. Then you find the block area and troubleshoot it.

Cheers, Udin

@ saparrow

if you go to the network adaptor of the vswitch is it connected? Yes, and at the correct speed ? Yes

under status it should say connected. Yes it is connected.

@jdptechnc

Go to the Configuration - Networking on the affected hosts and check the CDP info on each of the vmnics (click the balloon icon) for the vSwitch used for VLAN 9. = It says CDP is not available on this physical adaptor.

Are they able to see the physical switch info, and does it report similar info as the correctly functioning hosts?  = Yes the configuration is exatly similar to working hosts.

Are all uplinks showing they are up? yes

@ milton123

Can you ping VLAN - 9 gateway? yes I pinged it from the ESX

Your can also use traceroute command for find the destination route. Will try this.

After migrating, if you edit settings in the VM and disconnect the network adapter, apply, then edit again and connect, is the VM reachable over the network?  I have see this method overcome a vmnic issue that had previously gone undetected.

Are other VMs, other than the ones you are trying to move, connected to VLAN 9 and able to ping?

Are any other VLANs connected to this vSwitch?

thanks everyone for your help...

The issue is fixed...I asked the network guy to take a look if the ESX is mapped to the vLAN 9 or not. Earlier he said yes but checking again he found the ESX was in different Virtual Connect module and was not mapped for this vLAN.

He mapped it and all good now.
