IOmeter on Server 2008 - excessive error count

Hi all,

So I am benchmarking a pile of iSCSI SAN's, trying to evaluate them for a client using IOmeter. I am using OpenPerformanceTest.icf.

Up until now, my standard build for IOmeter is:

  • XP-32 bit
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 8 GB C:\ on LSI Logic Paralell (0:0)
  • 8GB unformatted PHYSICALDRIVE1. LSI Logic Paralell (1:0) (eagerzeroedthick)
  • OpenPerformanceTest.icf

This has worked great for comparing the SAN's, I have been running tests on 4 different SAN's for weeks now and have some solid ideas about the capabilities of each. Overall, everything performed well, and there were almost never any errors in "Total Error Count"

Ultimately the client asked that I run some benchmarks using their standard build for Server 2008 X64:

  • Server 2008 R2 X64
  • 40 GB C:\ on VMware pvscsi (0:0)
  • 8 GB unformatted PHYSICALDRIVE1 on VMware pvscsi (1:0) (eagerzeroedthick)
  • Firewall off, service stopped
  • IOmeter installed and run as "Run as administrator"
  • OpenPerformanceTest.icf

IOmeter.jpg

When using the W2K8, the first test (Max throughput, 100% Read) runs OK, then every other test develops thousands of errors (tens of thousands "Total Error Count" errors). I just don't get it. I have read VMware whitepapers indicating that the VMware pvscsi adapter can be used with IOmeter for benchmarking.

I must have missed something. Any help? Thx in advance.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm doing some testing on a virtualised Exchange system on 2008 R2 (1.6 TB disks, 64K allocation unit size, RAID 10, 64K stripe size, LSI adapter and thick provisioned eager zeroed).

IO Meter gives me roughly the IOPs I'm expecting, but the error count is around 55,000 across all worker threads and I'm using physical disks

Sorry for responding to such a old inquiry.

I ran into the the same problem today running Iometer2006 under  Windows Server 2008 R2 VM with fresh set of RDMs from SAN.

The Dynamo.exe screens shows that all Writes are failing:

DynamoError.png

It turned out that Windows2008R2 places all new disks in Offline and uninitialized mode after initial discovery.

You can use the DiskManagment GUI to Initialize and place the disks online by right clicking on eash Disk.

DynamoError.png

Alternatively you can use DiskPart to repeat the following operation on each disk:

select disk=<n>

attributes disk clear readonly

online disk noerr

convert mbr....

I also ran into this same issue, and initializing the disk worked.  Thanks!
