Hi,
I can't find any place that tells me when to use an external database for vCenter SSO or when to use the embeded one.
I see that for vCenter database, the embeded one still mantains the 5 host/50 VM rule of thomb recomendation but I found nothing for SSO database.
Any ideas or sizing tool for those databases in version 5.1?
Thanks!

Any ideas?
I'm sure you came accross this KB yourself, but indeed it's hard to find definite sizing information for SSO databases.
They talk about Best practices for upgrading to vCenter 5.1 ...
The interesting thing is the hardware requirements, it could be used (very basically) as a guideline I think, 2GB disk storage requirement for the SSO db.
vCenter Single Sign On Hardware | Requirement |
Processor | Intel or AMD x64 processor with two or more logical cores, each with a speed of 2GHz |
Memory | 3GB. Memory requirements might be higher if the vCenter Single Sign On database runs on the same host machine. If vCenter Single Sign On runs on the same host machine as vCenter Server, see |
Disk Storage | 2GB. Disk requirements might be higher if the vCenter Single Sign On database runs on the same host machine. |
Network Speed | 1Gbps |
Hardware | Requirement |
Processor | Intel or AMD x64 processor with two or more logical cores, each with a speed of 2GHz. |
Memory | 3GB. If vCenter Inventory Service runs on the same host machine as vCenter Server, see |
Disk Storage | At least 60GB for medium- to large-sized inventories (more than 100 hosts or 1000 virtual machines). If vCenter Inventory Service runs on the same host machine as vCenter Server, see . |
Network Speed | 1Gbps |
But basically that is about the most I can find with a mildly quick search ...
Hi spravtek,
Thanks for your answer! As you said, I saw that kb but I'm stil uncertain of the db configuration for SSO. I'm thinking in deploying for 20 hosts (3-5 VMs per host) the vCenter. They are already using vSphere but without vCenter.
I have to make sure to give the dba the requirements for the database. I used the database sizing tool for previous versions for giving them the size of the vCenter database and now I'm thinking in using the embeded one for SSO.
As I understand, for SSO the election between embeded and external is only for user commodity. No "VMware technical" criteria is described so I supose it just makes no difference.
Thanks again!!!

You're welcome ...
I think, unless you have a huge number of users in your SSO DB that 2GB will be more than enough, but it would be nice to just have a basic guideline, guess nobody has tested this yet
Im in the same boat - DBA is asking for size and expected growth - it doesnt look like this DB is very demanding but there isnt any other info either
