VMware Player 5 - Tools - "Cannot find component on update server..."

While creating a new VM in VMware Player v5.01.1 (build-894247), for Windows 8 Professional, I encountered an error stating "Cannot find component on update server.  Contact VMware support or your system administrator".  However, the VM creation continued, and the new Win 8 VM is apparently functioning correctly.

However, if I now attempt to install VMware Tools, I get the same error.

For Windows Hosts running VMware Player 5.0.1 Build 894247:

Installing VMware Tools ISO Images on Windows Host, download to Host and untar then execute.  This then silently installs the VMware Tools ISO Image into the working directory.  Then if VMware Tools will not install normally in the VM then manually assign the target VMware Tools ISO Image to the CD/DVD of the VM and manually install.

For Linux Hosts running VMware Player 5.0.1 Build 894247:

For installing VMware Tools ISO Images on Linux Host see information in my reply Re: WS 7.1.4 - Unable to download VMware Tools/Update to install on Linux Host.  Then if VMware Tools will not install normally In the VM then manually assign the target VMware Tools ISO Image to the CD/DVD of the VM and manually  install.

This has happened with many different releases and, unless VMware changed the path of the CDS Repository on there Software Update Server, the VMware Tools for VMware Player 5.0.1 have not yet been placed in the usual location on the Server.  So you can either wait until VMware gets their act together again or you can extract the VMware Tools from a VMware Workstation 9.0.1 download.

Well what do you know, as I was writing this VMware finally placed the VMware Tools for VMware Player 5.0.1 on the Software Update Server so try again now.

I am getting the same error message as of this writing (trying to download/install Tools into Ubuntu 12.10 x64), anyone actually get the Tools to install or have a link to them to download somewhere?  Seems like someone pooched this release a bit IMO.

Thank you.  I just retried the Tools installation from the Manage menu on the guest and I still get the same error.

Then have a look at: Re: VMware Player 5 - Tools - "Cannot find component on update server..."

I just followed your suggestion to download the tar file, etc., and I now have the tools installed.  Everything worked from there.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hello,

I realize this is an old thread.

However if anyone else finds it, or the original user is interested.

You may be able to modify the libcds.dll file to correct the software update URL and re-enable the built-in download function as it was intended to work.

Since this appears to occur for multiple generations or releases.

Experience with this behavior and the correction method may also apply for those.

Here is a thread created about how to fix the problem:
