    Windows 8 x64 RTM in Workstation e.x.p. 790308 - doesn't start

    ArtB Novice

Running Windows 8 x64 RTM in Workstation e.x.p. 790308 (on Windows 7x64 Enterprise as host).

It keeps showing the "blue panes" Windows logo.

And after a while (10 minutes or so) a real error message:

      Your PC needs to restart.

Please hold down the power button.

      Error Code: 0x0000005D

      Parameters:

      0x000000001FABFBFF

      0x0000000028000800

      0x0000000000000000

      0x0000000000000000

      VM Configuration:

      Memory                : 1GB

      Processors         : 2

      Harddisk (SCSI) : 24GB

      CD\DVD               : Windows8x64EnterpriseRTM.iso

      Network aAdapter: NAT

      Display                 : Auto detect

Tried two versions, one with 8.0 and one with "Tech Preview" hardware.

So far, no working Windows 8x64 RTM.

Or is there a work-around by doing something simple that I am missing?

At least for VMware Workstation 8.0.0 build-471780 it works flawlessly for me (Windows 8 Pro as well as Enterprise). Due to the VMware Workstation version, I configured the VM with guest OS "Windows 7 64-bit", 4GB memory and a 40 GB LSI Logic SAS virtual disk.

btw. the minimum RAM recommendation for the Windows 8 64-bit edition is 2 GB. Please see whether this makes a difference.

Tried all of the following (together and apart):

            - Windows 7 64-bit.

            - Memory (2048MB)

            - 40GB disk (because you never know)

            Alas, no success for now.

I still get the same error message.

Please post (attach) the VM's latest vmware.log. Maybe this contains any hints.

I attached th "latest" VMware log.

Didn't see anything  directly obvious or pointing in the right direction though.

Changing some BIOS (memory) settings didn't work either.

I even tried adding the following:

                vmGenCounter.enable = FALSE

                No, nothin'

                  May help you

I had a problem with another app and this Windows 8 RTM iso

I finally found out why, this may be the reason too

The iso did not have the "Joliet" property set to ON

So I used PowerISO, File => Open iso => File => Properties and make sure Joliet is checked, save iso

PowerISO is not free and I'm not sure this will solve your problem, but there is big chances

                    Not working (for me).

PowerISO can only save a 300MB file in the "free" version.

But I mounted the image with Virtual Clone Drive and save the "CDrom" as an .ISO file with ImgBurn.

Via the way above I created an .ISO file with Joliet.

Indeed Art now at home I try with the original ISO without Joliet, and it boots fine, at least I have tried to pass the Windows logo => ok, then prompt for key => ok

If it can help, I experienced the exact same issue you have got while doing a bootable USB key from the Windows 8 ISO and while testing this key in a QEMU session (Qemu is a similiar virtualization app but via command line useful to test boot stuffs)

May I recommand you this alternative.

Build an USB bootable key from the Windows 8 ISO

                          Formatting the USB key

                      01) Open a command prompt in Administrator mode

                      02) Run diskpart.exe

                      03) DISKPART > list

                      04) DISKPART > select disk <yourUSBdiskNumber>

                      05) DISKPART > clean

                      06) DISKPART > create partition primary

                      07) DISKPART > select partition 1

                      08) DISKPART > active

                      09) DISKPART > format FS=NTFS

                      10) DISKPART > assign

                      11) DISKPART > exit

                          Make the USB key bootable

                      01) Mount the Windows ISO (in this sample I assume D:\is our mounted ISO)

                      02) Open a command prompt in Administrator mode

                      03) Change directory to D:\boot\

                      04) Type bootsect.exe /nt60 E:\ (WARNING, in this sample I assume E:\ is the USB key, double check this to not change the boot of your default drive by mistake)

Copy the original Windows 8 file from the ISO to USB key

                      01) Mount the Windows ISO (in this sample I assume D:\is our mounted ISO)

                      02) Open a command prompt in Administrator mode

                      03) Type XCOPY D:\*.* E:\ /E /F /H (in this sample I assume E:\ is the USB key)

3/4 of the job is done, you have a bootable USB key that could install Windows 8 on any system capable of booting from USB, unfortunely, VMware does not offer to boot from the USB device so follow the alternative below

                      USB boot in VMware

                      01) Get Plop Boot Manager 5.0

                      02) Extract plpbt.iso from plop and mount it in your vm virtual CD drive set to be connected at boot

                      03) Power on the vm, connect your USB device to the vm on the bottom right icon of vmware

                      04) Hit Ctrl+Alt+Insert so the vm will restart with the USB + CDROM devices connected at boot

                      05) Quickly hit Esc and choose to boot on the CDROM

                      06) In the Plop dos menu, select USB

                      07) See if the bug still happens

                      08) Let me know your results so I may create an informative thread for a better visibility if worth it

Hope it will be ok for you good luck

Haven't tried the last solution (and won't be able to).

But, I upgraded my PC to Windows 8 (with the .iso file mentioned above).

After installation I needed to reinstall VM Workstation e.x.p. and now it works flawlessly (and runs the .iso and Windows 8x 64 as a VM).

Conclusion: Running Workstation exp 790308 on Windows 8 x64 Enterprise RTM is working great thus far.

Here is the solution to this problem that a community member posted on their website:

                          http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/26800/windows-8-on-virtualbox-and-vmware-your-pc-needs-to-restart-fix/

You must have the No-Execute Memory Protection option enabled in your BIOS.

Reboot your computer and access your BIOS setup screen.   You will need to make find this setting which may exist under the CPU configuration section (every BIOS menu is different)
