Great question!

We do plan to offer VCDX defense boot camps prior to both events - led by VCDX 001 (Mr. John Arrasjid). I am in the process of finalizing the dates with John now. When they are finalized they will be posted here.

This is great.  Are the defenses expected to take up just the 4 or 3 days of the show, or will the panel be in session all week?  It's a busy time for the panelists as well as defendants, so if there's a chance of the Friday for instance in SF, I'd like to book travel accordingly.

Thanks

Simon

At this time the defense scheduling plan is:

For VMworld San Francisco we will sit panels Monday 8/27 - Thursday 8/30;

For VMworld Barcelona we will sit panels Monday 10/8 - Thursday 10/11.

Your defense timeslot within one of these 4-day windows will be determined after your application has been accepted.

*Note: You must choose to submit a VCDX application for the VMworld San Francisco defense or the VMworld Barcelona defense. You may not apply for both sessions.

Smiley Happy Awesome, looking forward to planning out my time now for the VCDX5 at Barcelona. I'm assuming then the VCAP5-DCA will have gone GA for a few months prior so people can take it, have the time to get the result back and then submit their design for review?

That's funny Gregg Smiley Happy  I'll be amazed if the DCA is out before August, in theory that will give enough time to take it and get a result, but not a few months by any stretch.

 I wasn't being facetious, more just working it all out in my head of how I can map out my path to defending hopefully in Barcelona. I guess if the DCA is out end of this month then it's possible if the time frames of say two to three weeks to get the result back like it was for the DCA4.

I received a great question from Gary Blake via email today and I'd like to address it here.

Gary asks: "Can you please clarify one element of the VCDX, if I was to attempt this at VCDX4 level what will we have to do to upgrade this to VCDX5?"

The upgrade path for VCDX4 to VCDX5 was announced on May 3rd:  http://communities.vmware.com/thread/400727?tstart=0

But I would like to clarify one point and offer some advice to those who are planning to defend for VCDX4 at the VMworld events and then upgrade to VCDX5 in the near future. I direct your attention to paragraph 2 below:

Current VCDX4 holders in good standing will be able to upgrade their certification to VCDX5 by successfully passing the VMware Certified Advanced Professional 5- Datacenter Design (VDCD510) exam.

All VCDX4-holders wishing to upgrade will be required to achieve VCP5. There will be a three-month window following the VCAP5-DCD exam release during which the VCP5 certification requirement will be satisfied upon successful completion of the VCAP5-DCD exam. After the three-month window expires, all VCDX4-holders will be required to satisfy published training and examination requirements for VCP5 prior to completing their upgrade via the VCAP5-DCD exam.

The VCAP5-DCD exam was released at the end of May. So those wishing to take advantage of the VCP5/VCAP5-DCD certification bundle will need to pass the VCAP5-DCD before the offer window expires. In this case, on August 30th, 2012 - the last day of VMworld San Francisco. If you do not pass the VCAP5-DCD on or before August 30th, and you are not VCP5, you will need to sit the VCP5 exam in addition to the VCAP5-DCD exam to upgrade your VCDX4 certification.

So, my advice to VCP4s defending for VCDX4 at either VMworld is this: Reduce complexity, save time (and probably some money), sit the VCAP5-DCD exam before August 30th!

*Note - we will be offering the VDCD510 exam at VMworld San Francisco.

Hi Mark

What about the VDCA510 exam at VMworld? Although this would be past the August 17th cut off date for submissions for the VCDX5 at Barcelona..

Important announcement for those planning to defend for VCDX at VMworld Barcelona!

The Barcelona application deadline has been extended one week to August 24th to allow more time for those who need to achieve VCAP5-DCA to defend for VCDX5.

In order to be fair - this extension applies to all applicants, both VCDX4 and VCDX5 seekers may take advantage of the extended deadline.

We have a 12-5 timeslot on Sunday afternoon 8/26 in SFO.

I am waiting on a final venue/room assignment and final run time for the event. As soon as I have the assignment and timing I will post it here and email everyone on the list.

My time zone conversion sucks. If I look up the PDT time zone, I get UTC-7, while Mark writes UTC-8. Which one is it? I'm assuming that UTC-7 is correct.

I'm in the Netherlands, UTC+2. The deadline in my local time zone for the Barcelona defense is 9 a.m. on Friday, right?

It's UTC/GMT -8. DST ends September 4th in California.

Regardless, I will not deny you (or anyone else) access to the program for being +- 1 hour with your application because of a timezone miscalculation!
