HCMON - "\Driver\asmtxhci"

I am experiencing warnings in my event viewer every time I boot my PC.

  • I have a new EVGA X79 motherboard
  • It contains the ASMedia ASM1042 chipset for USB 3.0 support
  • Running VMWare Player 4.0.3
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\asmtxhci"
  • Source: hcmon; Warning: Detected unrecognized USB driver "\Driver\pci"

I believe the HCMON service is from VMWare. Any suggestions how I can resolve the warnings would be greatly appreciated!

you will have to wait until USB 3 devices are supported on Windows hosts

@continuum

According to this article, VMWare Player 4.0 already supports USB 3.0 pass-though using a virtual xHCI USB contoller:

jbgrobler, please see also my thread.  I just noticed that v4.0.4 has just been released.  I am running 4.0.2 and will give this one a try even though nothing in the Release Notes indicates that there is a fix for this.  Enjoy, John.

I'm using v4.0.4 build-744019 so the update won't fix the problem.

I have been reading a few VMWare posts regarding USB 3.0 support.

  • continuum is correct, currently only Linux hosts have the VMWare xHCI controller available
  • xHCI also requires VMWare hardware level 8 or higher inside the virtual machine, so a VM created with the new versions of VMWare
  • Currently no generic xHCI driver exists on Windows that VMWare can use, they are all OEM drivers

Basically, USB 3.0 support is still very young, so we just have to wait. Maybe when Intel Ivy Bridge becomes mainstream with its native USB 3.0 support will we get a driver generic enough for VMWare to use?

ale.ale, I do not have a ready answer for you.  I can still  use my USB 2.0 ports (I have several on my desktop).  I looked at the specifications for your machine and see that there are 2 USB 3.0 and 1 USB 2.0 ports.  Have you tried the 2.0 port - hopefully it is identified on the port?  You may be able to change the nature of your 3.0 ports to 2.0 and I would suggest a Support Request to ASUS.  Good luck and enjoy, John.

LitleMint, we are all waiting on a new release with USB 3.0 support.  I see that the latest is still 4.0.4, so no help.  Enjoy, John.

i have to uninstall all software from the control panel that manage the USB 3.0; then restart pc. Once restart, right click on my computer, then manage and select hardware manage / configuration and disable the USB 3.0 hardware without uninstall drivers (in my case i have only one peripherals with a "!" dot and i disable it). Restar pc.

On my laptop working fine but for now i can't installa vmware 9.0 to try if a new release fix my problem.

good luck

I installed the latest VMware Player (5.0.0-812388) and still cannot see a USB stick in my 3.0 connectors.  The HCMON messages remain in System Log.  Enjoy, John.

Hi all!

I have an ASUS K55VM (similar to ale ale laptop).

I tried to uninstall the Intel xHCI software from control panel with success, but when I restarts, in the device manager

only I can see the "usb ehci" stack. The usb3 controller is marked with "!" at "uknown devices".

But, when I plug an usb device, Windows doesn't detect anything.

ale ale, is this the procedure you follow?

  Thanks so much.

Hi!

I have your same laptop; try downloading updated drivers from Intel website and install everything. Restart the system. Then from Control Panel install/uninstall applications, uninstall the software that bring USB 3.0 entry. On my list i had the controller eXtension and ASmedia (if remember correctly). DO NOT uninstall the device drivers from device manager. Restart. To me the 3 USB ports (2 on the left side, blue color, USB 3.0 type) and the right single USB 2.0 function properly.

Good luck
