Small Data Center UPS power managment

Hello, thanks to all who respond:

I run a small data center with 5 virtual hosts (Dell R710 - R910) servers. We replaced to hosts with new R910's so that the data center is running pretty much all latest generation servers.

The issue I'd like to tackle now is UPS and power management. We have been running 8 APC good old standard 1400v-1500v standalone units from 5+ years ago. We replace battery’s here and there but they have run good. The problem is obviously that they don’t communicate back any longer to shut downs servers gracefully. We have had one power outage in the past 5 years recently that shut everything down when the UPS's died. This is of course a situation from being pinched by finances and its sime to change it as I can afford to buy new UPS's.

I was wonder what people would suggest for new UPS's. My thought is that I can get the 2200V versions that we do have plugs that fit now (we don’t have the larger round connection for the 3000v versions). Reading around it seems like I need to get versions that have onboard nics so that I can install Powershute on Vmware management virtual machine to communicate and shut down?

I was wondering how other people similar to my setup have done it and what’s the easiest and safest way to get this done as well as units/software that will help. This topic seems to still be a mess out there in the virtual world.

Thank you!
