Acronis Restored Windows XP crashes with BSOD on startup

I have tried to restore a Windows XP Pro image created with Acronis TrueImage Home onto a VMWare virtual machine, using VMWare Player.  When I try to boot the system up I momentarily get a blue screen followed by an endless cycle of reboots.  The same happens in Safe Mode.  I used to be able to restore this but we migrated the installation to a more modern Levono system and it is no longer possible to restore to a virtual machine.  I assume there's a problem with the HD drivers in the new system.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Here is my .vmx file:

I'd suggest you press "F8" while Windows is booting. The text based menu offers an option to disable automatic reboots after a BSOD. Once you know what's causing to BSOD it should be possible to find a solution. Btw. is there a special reason you still have the "autoinst.flp" (Easy Install) floppy attached to the VM? Also double check whether it is correct that the virtual disk is connected to the virtual SCSI port "scsi1:0" rather than to the default "scsi0:0".

Did you restore the .vmx file from the backup too or did you create a new one? This looks like the current VM uses a different virtual disk adapter than the one which was configured for the original VM!?

What you could try is to run VMware Converter using the "Configure Machine" option to see whether this injects the corret drivers.

I simply created a new .vmx using default settings except for disk size.  The "scsi1:0" was a futile experiment - it was originally set at "scsi0:0" - and that didn't boot either.  The floppy was set up by default.  The original system was on a physical, not a virtual computer.

Hopefully I have found a solution from Acronis - there's a Plus Pack which allows restoration on any hardware - for an extra $40.  It is supposed to load compatible drivers when the system is restored.  Small price for peace of mind if it works.

I just installed the Acronis Plus Pack - this claims to support restoration to any hardware:smileyconfused:.  During the restore I got the following two prompts:

"Device driver  'PCI\Ven_15AD&DEV_0770&SUBSYS_077015AD&REV_00' for  'Microsoft Windows XP Professional' cannot be found.  Place the driver  on a removable media or in folder 'A:\' and click Retry"

"Device driver  'PCI\Ven_15AD&DEV_0770&SUBSYS_197615AD&REV_00' for  'Microsoft Windows XP Professional' cannot be found.  Place the driver  on a removable media or in folder 'A:\' and click Retry"

I  don't have access to any file resembling this - where do I get these  from? - I assume that they are drivers.  Would they be VMWare drivers,  or are they from the parent (Levono) system?

If I ignore the above prompts, I get the same BSOD when I reboot my system.

I  tried installing the VCentre Converter - but it only supports old  versions of Acronis (hopefully eventually there will be an upgrade).

That's unfortunately true. However if you first restore the image to a virtual disk using Acronis and then run VMware Converter using the "Configure Machine" option, the Converter should inject the appropriate drivers.
