How to run Dell DSET utility for ESXi 4.1

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge T710 server having hard disk issue and Dell has advised to run the DSET utility. I want to know how to run the dell DSET utility in ESXi 4.1

Tried to follow the procedure listed in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h41ybDbUN7o but got stuck after changing the mod as could not move ahead. Looks like the youtube video is for ESX server and not for ESXi that's why.

Hoping to receive some information

AFAIK, the only way to get a DSET with ESXi is to use the OMSA Linux LiveCD.

Hi,

The use of OMSA Linux LiveCD will require to boot ESXi from it and hence shutdown my production VM, any other alternative to run Dell DSET without powering down the VMs and also extracting the required information.

The question can be closed.

I found the following document forward by Dell Support.

Have not tried the procedure as it requires to shut down the VMs and put the Host in Maintenance Mode.

FYI i can not get the remote utility to work on ESXi 5.0 U2 if anyone else runs into this. OMSA live is still my only option at this poitn.

I just tested this with 5.0 U2, using these instructions and it worked as expected.

Note: I couldn't get the instructions in the PDF linked above to work either. My blog entry I just linked to should get you going.

I had issues a couple of months ago when using DSET 3.3 and ended up using the LiveCD option. Today I tried again with DSET 3.4 but got same results.

"Failed to gather Chassis/Storage data. Check the IP Address, credentials and namespace."

It turns out that options lg,sw,ad don't work well against ESXi - 5.1 in my case.

Selecting st,hw only, worked fine on the other hand. I think those are fine for Dell to start working in your case.
