Easy Install is not: Ubuntu 12

I have Workstation 7.1.6 on WinXP host. Trying to install Ubuntu 12.4 from a downloaded .ISO file.

VMware detected Ubuntu and offered "Easy install".

The installation went well until the guest rebooted, then it shows a black terminal screen saying:

VMware Easy Install

PLEASE WAIT! VMware tools is currently being installed......

Both CD icons (the guest CD and tools install CD) are continuosly blinking,

and it sits in this state for hours. The tools installation never completes, the graphical shell never shows up.

There is no error messages of any sort.

If I reboot the guest, it does the same again, so I cannot install the tools manually.

Am I only one having this problem? Any solution?

Thanks,

As a workaround, do not use Easy Install, rather select "I will install the operating system later" and then do a manual install.  Then install VMware Tools afterwards from the VM menu.

Thanks, this is how I've installed it at last.

It looks that Ubuntu already knows about VMware, it installed the vmware drivers etc, and behaves well without installing the tools.

If you want to use the VMware Shared Folders feature and or Unity view then you'll need to install VMware Tools.
