Prior IT Knowledge to VCP

Hi just wondering what do you need to know prior to undertaking or learning VMware and VCP 5.0

e.g. any certifications or experience prior?

Lets say if you didn't have any IT experience, could you still get the VCP 5.0?

Welcome to the Community - To answer your question directly it is highly unlikely you would be able to obtain a VCP with little no IT expreince. To understand virtualization and VMware you will need at a minimum basic understanding of networks, storage and compurer technologies as virtualization ties all the technologies together.

1. Attend a qualifying VMware authorized course.
2. Gain hands-on experience with VMware vSphere 5.
3. Pass the VCP5 Exam.

This exam is certainly not "entry" level. As stated in the requirements, I suggest you get some hands on experience even before attending the course.

Download the evaluation software from VMware's website and play around. Build your own lab environment (www.labguides.com/autolab). Break and then try to fix things before asking for help, but DO ask for help if you can't fix it. These forums are FULL of very knowledgeable and helpful people.

I would suggest that someone with no IT experience would find the required training course and the VCP exam incredibly tough.

Being honest, I worked as a VMware instructor for 6 years, and if someone with no IT experience appeared in one of my classes I'd expect to be calling my management to have that person removed.

So what do you need to know? As much about as many of these technologies as possible: storage, networking, server hardware, server operating systems and application software.

First try to make some kind of experience... Also the course could be unsuseful without a minimal experience.

Start from simple virtualization concept with Workstation (or Fusion).

Then pass to the free Hypervisor.

Let's say you don't have any driving experience.  Would you expect to sit behind the wheel of a semi and pass your drivers test?

VCP requires knowledge on compute, storage and networking.  Even people with IT experience and if they specialized in one area, they will have to catch up on the other areas.

VCP is to test the ability to manage a VMware enviornment so even if you don't work for the IT department you will have to have the ability to manage an "IT environment".
