Problem with seeing LUN after deleting RDM

Hi,

I have a physical Raw Device Mapping  to one of our VM's which I have removed and deleted, I wish now to use this space on another VM however after I remove the disk from the VM the esx host nor any of the VM can see the lun.

The only thing it will allow me to do is "use an existing disk" and I can select the pointer_1.vmdx file and the disk with all the data appears which I thought I had deleted.

Can anyone advise what could be causing this issue? Basically I want to remove the Raw Device Mapping and be able to use this disk somewhere else such as ro add addtional storage to our esx hosts.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Nick

As long as the pointer file exists, you won't be able to use the LUN except for adding it as a virtual disk. What you need to do is to select "Delete from disk" when you remove the RDM from the virtual machine. This will delete the pointer file, but will not modify the data on the LUN itself.
