virtual distributed switch questions

We will moving from virtual standard switches to virtual distributed switches in the coming months.

We will be using the Cisc00 1000v. The supervisor module will run on hardware, the Cisco 1010.

My questions are.

1. Is it a best practice to keep management connections on virtual standard switches if possible?

2. Our Virtual Center servers are virtual machines should I move them to physical?

This is why generally I prefer vDS with LBT, NIOC & SIOC; with that setup you could just use two 10GbE uplinks and be perfectly fine.

Just use standard teaming and put the 4th uplink as standby for all networks.

Cheers,

Paul

1) Most environments that can afford it will build a management cluster that only uses vSS. This is where the vCenter and database server will live as well as other infrastructure management devices, such as SRM, View, vCloud etc.

2) If you are going to use a Nexus 1010 or 1000V on all the hosts and do not have a management cluster, then I would make vCenter physical as well as the database. Others would say no, but I am extremely risk adverse when it comes to enterprise grade computing. Running vCenter on a Nexus creates a circular dependancy that should be avoided.

Paul

I've decided to put the management connections on 1 GB ports that will not be migrated to the 1000v virtual appliances when they are implemented.

Now I'll have to revisit how to set up the teaming as I'll have 4 10 GB connections with only three functions to run over them, Storage, vmotion and vm network traffic.
