Migrate to vCenter 5.0 and move SQL Express to Enterprise

Hello everyone,

Currently I have physical vCenter 4 with a Database runing on the same server. I am planing to do the following:

1- Have my vCenter as a virtual server (fresh server).

2- Move the local database to another database server.

3- Upgrade to vCenter 5.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi,

are there reasons why you want to migrate your database?

Move Database

We are running our vCenter as a virtual server as well since 3 years without any issues.

Upgrade to vCenter 5, if you plan to install a new server, install a new one and link to the new database.

Hi Frank,

Actually I want to have it on a clustered DB, that's why I'm moving it.

DO you recommend building a new server?

Hi,

i would install a new one. But only for one reason.

Install a new vCenter isn´t that complicatet. I guess you know.

And if something goes wrong while upgrading to the new database, you are able to start the old vCenter and could have a closer look what had happened.

And have a vCenter that work until you know the issue.

But that is only how i would do it
