No place for swap file (install XP Pro on Win 7)

MY Goal:  To use XP Pro as a VM with internet access and access to the rest of my network.

My Host Configuration:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1
RAM: 8gb
Hard Disk (main): SATA 284gb
Hard Disk (second): SATA 1TB
Optical Drive: Blu-ray SATA
Internet Access: Connected to Router ---> Cable Modem
Security: Windows Essentials and Avast!

Software: VMWare Workstation 8.0.1 build-528992

Level Expertise: I know my way around a computer but I have almost no experience with VM's

Problem #1:  After creating a new VM via Workstation (using all 'defaults' where applicable), I get a BSOD that states it cannot find a place to put a swap file.

Problem #2:  Once I run the created VM, Caldera starts and runs through it's process and then dumps me at a [DR-DOS] A:\> prompt. (shouldn't it go directly into XP setup?)

Steps I have taken:  I have tried many different things that I have found in this forum (and others).  Tried switching just about every configuration option to no avail. I even tried Virtual PC and received the same error (so I know it's not a problem with the VMWare program itself).

I would appreciate any/all help.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Community,

from the .vmx file it looks like you selected the "Easy Install" feature while creating the Windows XP VM. I'd suggest you run an interactive installation by selecting "I will install the operating system later" in the New VM wizard. Before powering on the VM, attach the XP ISO (or CD) to the virtual CD-ROM drive and make sure "Connect at power on" is selected. Also connect "%Program Files%\VMware\VMware Workstation\Resources\vmscsi.flp" to the virtual floppy disk drive. This floppy image contains the Buslogic drivers which can be added by pressing "F6" during the XP setup.

I followed your directions and received the following:

PXE boot is the last boot option if the boot loader cannot find a valid boot partition on the disk and no other boot device like the CD-ROM drive. Please double check that the CD-ROM drive is connected (Connect at power on) and the CD is bootable.

Well I'm feeling pretty dumb right now....I was using a backup of my original copy of WinXP Pro and it wasn't 'bootable'.  After reburning it, everything is working fine.

Thanks Andre'

I appreciate your help.
