Vista & VMware Tools

When I try to install vmware tools on a Vista VM running on VMPlayer it tells me it can't manually install while "easy install" is running. The Vista installation is complete, don't know why it thinks easy install is still running. Any ideas?

... I ended up just deleting that VM and installing again

That's another workaround Smiley Wink

Glad to see you have it up and running now.

but one of the benefit from using the easy install feature is the automatic installation of VMware Tools. you did not find it installed automatically with the Visa?

No, that's the point, it didn't install the tools and apparently it thinks easy install is still running so it won't let me install manually. The install is finished, Vista has even already downloaded updates, and I've installed Office but it won't let me install VMware Tools, it says "VMware Tools installation cannot be started manually while Easy Install is in progress".

I'm running the player on a Windows 7 Ultimate box with I7 processor and 9 gigs RAM. I've installed other VMs with Win 2000, Win XP, and Win 2003 Server, the easy install worked fine on those and installed the tools automatically.

I don't know where to go to try and tell it to cancel the easy install.

I don't know where to go to try and tell it to cancel the easy install.

Enter the VM's settings and remove the autoinst.flp from the virtual floppy disk drive. You may also need to delete the flp file from the VM's folder.

Thanks André, I ended up just deleting that VM and installing again. This time I told it to just create the VM and I would install the OS later. Did that and then ran the VMware tools installation after the install and it worked fine. Thanks again!

As another person posted, you have to get rid of that floppy image... here is the actual KB for it: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=101768...

I think it has something to do with when you first set up Easy Install, it puts in a username for you, but once the install is complete, and the OS restarts, Easy Install is expecting to finish it's process under that username, and instead the only option is to log in with Administrator, so the Easy Install process never completes.  This has been my experience with Vista, Win 7, and Server 2008.  Did not have that issue with XP/2003 OS's.

If anyone is still reading this thread can you tell me how to set a status update for this?  I've been getting emails about once a week ever since this telling me to login and set a status update.

The emails you get are "Summary" emails which can be deactivated in your email preferences (http://communities.vmware.com/user-preferences!input.jspa) by setting "Send me an email summary" to "Never".
