vCops Manager 5.0 - datastore information not collected

Hi,

We've instaled vCops Manager 5.0 accross two datacenters (separate Virtual Centres).  It seems that vCops is not able to collect any data about datastores from on of the vCentres - all other data is collected fine. Datastores are displayed with grey question mark on the dashboard.

This was a fresh install, and not upgrade from previous vCops version.

User used for data collection has full Administrative priviledges on both environments.

All services are running fine on both vCentres, and I can see full datastore information (including Storage Views) in vCenter Client.

I generated vCops support log bundle, but I'm not really sure what I should be looking for.

Any ideas?

a little more info will probably help:

Hi,

Additional info as requested:

vCenter 4.1 Build 345034 (both sites) in Linked mode.

Both sites are connected to a mix of EMC Clariion Fibre Channel Attached storage.

There are around 160 FC datastores in the site where dastore info is not collected.

There are around 50 FC datastores in the site where datastore info is collected.

I have the same issue here.

I'm running vSphere 5. I have a ticket open with VMware support, I'll post here if I get anything useful back.

Out of interest, have a look at the /local/log/collector.log in the Analytics_VM.zip, let me know if you see entries that look like:

Any luck with your support case?

I am also on vSphere 5 and I believe I am seeing the same issue. Datastores are showing as grayed out with "no data available".

Hi waldorfo2,

VMware dialled in yesterday and gathered a bunch of log files, they're in the process of analysing them. I'll let you know when I hear back from them.

I have let my VMware account manager know that there are a few pepole with this problem, and have shown them this forum thread.

Regards,
Alex

There is a hot fix available for this issue that can be applied on top of 5.0 GA vApp. Please contact support to get it.

Thanks.

For those using the trial kit and hitting this problem, is there a hotfix that can be made available?

i'm seeing the same exceptions reported in the Analytics VM's collector.log file.

Hi all,

I can confirm that the hotfix does resolve the problem. We've just applied it to our vCOps and it's all working now.

Alex

I have tried calling VMware Support but since I do not have a license to vCOPS, I was forwarded to Sales who knew nothing about the hotfix.  I was told to get with my VMware distributor.  The problem I see with this is that the hotfix should be made readily available to all who seek it with word of caustion if necessary. So, interested in vCOPS and trialing it but still waiting to get this hotfix.

I have the same problem and I am also a test user. I have opened a ticket with VMware support as a vcenter 5 problem hoping that I can get through to someone who will issue me the hotfix.

It would be in their best intrest to do so. The datstore availability issue is currently stopping us from dropping 50k on this software. In the meantime we have begun evaluating alternative products.

Eventually, you can do your evaluation with a maintenance update/release of vcops, where this issue should be resolved.

That is going to cut it pretty close to my deadline. Hopefully I can gather enough information so that it can compete against the products I am already using from other vendors in our best of breed analysis.

I am suprised that VMware would rather see potential customers work with semi-functional software than distribute a hotfix for a non-production application.

Well, I'm sure you guys know what you're doing. I look forward to getting my hands on a fully functional product next month.

There are a few other vendors doing this level of collection and analysis. We tested and Reflex Systems is a good one (reflexsystems.com).
