I have created a Windows XP Pro VM under a Windows 7 Pro host using Player 4.02. When I try to install VMware tools I get the message "Could not find conponent on update server. Contact VMware support or your system administrator." The host and guest both have working network and internet connectivity. I saw at least one other poster on another forum mentioned this error message and was told to install by mounting the iso and install manually. I have looked in every subdirectory of the Player install and cannot find any windows.iso file. Is it supposed to be there in this version of player? If not, how can I get the iso? Any help is appreciated.
This issue will probably be corrected within the next few days and I've see this with other releases. Right now the latest repository showing is: http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.0.1

Got it. Thanks!
I just created a Ubuntu 10.04 Guest on a Win 7 Home Prem 64 Bit OS. But I am getting the same msg using VM Player 4.0.2. I also tried to down load and install Boinc using the Synaptic Packake manager and it is broken; the search does not work. I went to the top of the Guest window, clicked on File/DL all Components; but all I get is a msg to contact my IT Admin (me) or VMware Support (you). This has happened 3 times in a row. Each time I deleted the DLed files in case they had been corrupted during DL and reDLed new image files to start over with without success. What else can I do? I need vmware tools and

First of all this is not VMware Tech Support nor do I work for VMware. I can't tell you why VMware releases a piece of software and then not make VMware Tools available for it but this is not the first time and I'd bet it will not be the last time either. It does seem a bit stupid now, doesn't it!? (Rhetorical question. ) My suggestion would be to not use VMware Player 4.0.2 if you cannot download the VMware Tools components through the program and instead use VMware Player 4.0.1 because the files are in the repository (http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.0.1). Or download VMware Workstation 8.0.2 and extract the VMware Tools files from it and use them with VMware Player.
I just got done DLing Player 4.0.2 and ended up with the same problem. I was just hoping someone in the community might have an answer. I didn’t expect or require the correct answer from you. Just thought someone had a similar experience and was able to correct or work thru it already.
1] You need to download the VMWare Tools for linux as specified in the previou email.
http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.01/528992/windows/packages
download tools-linux-8.8.1.exe.tar
2] The next step is somewhat fuzzy but this is how I did it. Click on the download .tar file , if you have winzip or winrar installed, the program will launch and display two files:
descriptor.xml
tools-linux-8.8.1,exe
Click on *.exe file.....(not sure what happens here, it looks like it tries to install somewhere in the host directory.)
3] Launch VMPlayer/Ubuntu. When its up and running, wait for about a minute or two and then click on Virtual Machine -> Install VMWare Tools
4] Within Ubuntu, a gui will pop up showing the VM-Ware tools as a *.tar.gz file.
5] Open a Terminal window and mount the cdrom to your home directory. (you need to create a mount point in your home directory...ex. cdrom)
In your home directory:
$mkdir cdrom
$ mount /dev/cdrom /home/xxx/cdrom
6] cd to the /home/xxx/cdrom directory and uncompress the .*.tar.gz file.
$uncompress *.tar.gz
$tar -xvf *
7] cd to vmware-tools-distrib
8] Execute vmware-install.pl and follow the directions.
$./vmware-install.pl
9] There are some notes towards the end of the installation stating how to run VMware tools...save to a log file so you can go back to it after executing
step 10.
10] When it's done installing, restart your VWMare/Ubuntu
There is probably an easier way of doing it...I did it on the fly.....
Good Luck and have fun 🙂
Insert, replace Step 5 and Step 6 with the following:
5] Create a mount point in your home directory.
$mkdir cdrom
Login as root
$sudo -i
# mount /dev/cdrom /home/xxxx/cdrom
exit out of root
6] Copy the tar.gz file from the mounted directory to your home directory. Its is read-only.
$ cp * /home/xxxx
Uncompress and untar the file.
$ uncompress *.tar.gz
$ tar *
continue with previous email Step 7 - 10

The link I provided was done so strictly as a reference and was not provided to or suggest that one use the VMware Tools for 4.0.1 in 4.0.2. Not saying one can't do it or it will not work however if one wants to use 4.0.2 then I recommend waiting until VMware provides the proper version of VMware Tools for it or getting the proper version out of the VMware Workstation 8.0.2 installer package.
It's extremely absurd that VMware published VMware Player 4.0.2 over a week ago and has not yet provided the proper version of VMware Tools for this release through its normal download methods!
Tools downloads appear to be available now...
Robert D. Petruska wrote: Tools downloads appear to be available now...
They do not appear to be at the same location as the other 3.x, 4.x versions (http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/) the latest I see is 4.0.1. Obviously not that one should have to go that route to get VMware Tools installed however many a time in the past it was, for one reason or another, some users only option other then to download VMware Workstation to get them.
Either way this does not excuse VMware from putting up a new release of VMware Player and then not making VMware Tools available through VMware Players normal routes for a week!
Oh, I agree Woody. And I'm not 100% positive that they are available... Just that when I click the button now to Download All Components, I get a message that All Components are up-to-date, rather than one that says for each of the 6 downloads that the server is unavailable. That being said, I extracted the Tools installers from the Workstation installer and ran them to get the Tools iso images into my Player directory... so I don't know if that has updated any registry keys for Player or anything like that.

Nothing has changed, yet. VMware Tools for VMware Player 4.0.2 are not yet available through the normal routes!
No they don't!

Just wanted to give some follow up to my original post. I got the tools downloaded and installed using the repository link given by WoodyZ (thanks!) Unfortunately, it didn't solve the main problem I was having with Player. This is somewhat off topic from my original post but I will describe it just for general information. It may shed some light on problems with VMware Player and the current version of tools. My original intent was to try to run a legacy application (Dictaphone) which my company uses and which is incompatible with Windows 7 in an XP VM. My original build was successful with Player 4.0.1 and whatever version of tools it downloaded at that time (I didn't notice the version of tools). This Dictaphone application depends upon the use of a USB footpedal controller (which presents to the system as a game controller) and a standard microphone for dictation. The microphone needs the 20dB boost box checked in the audio control panel or else nothing works. Anyway, the first install worked but soon after that I either updated Player to version 4.0.2 or the version of tools automatically updated, or both. This broke the system as the microphone lost the 20dB boost and it wasn't even present as an option in control panel anymore. I have done numerous re-installs and tried downgrading back to 4.0.1 but it looks like the most recent version of tools (8.8.1 I think) is causing this problem. Anyway, after an initial success I have not been able to get the Win XP VM to expose that crucial 20dB boost setting in any of my installs. Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory! I was so close!
All I get when I try to do this is "File Not Found". At least that is what happened today, 2-18-12.
Tools for vmware player are yesterday uploaded in the following thread by vmware:
