Are you using the free esxi license? vma won't be able to do backups with that.
outside of that, it seems the vm names you provided can't be found. I seem to recall that it is case sensitive.
I am unsure of the disconnect in your log is significan't or not. It may be, in which case you'd need to check the esxi host logs to see if it'll say why it disconnected.
I double checked with vmware, we do have a licensed version.
I have tried three methods of specifying the VMs; by folder, by vmdk name, with and without ".vmdk". all of these are as specifified in the datastore.
Where would I find the ESXi logs?
the name is by the display name in vcenter/vclient.
the logs are in /var/log on the esxi console. there are various files, the error you want may be in any of them depending on exact cause.
The problem was using file names rather than the names displayed in vSphere.
