Workstation 8 & Unity options

I'm an ESXi guy, and even though I've used Workstation since version 6, and I don't use it regularly.  I just got a new machine and upgraded to Workstation 8 and need some help to get it to do what I'd like it to do, it it will do it.

Situation:  The host is Windows 7 Pro 64.  The guest is Windows XP 32.  I have unity set up on a couple icons on my desktop that need to run

1.  If the VM is not running, when I click on them, they start the VMWare Workstation, but before the OS finishes loading, a box pops up asking me if I want to wait for the app any longer.  I wait for the OS to come up and click yes, then everything minimizes like it should, and the app comes up fine.  Kind of ugly.  If I close all the apps the VM closes also.  When I shut down the host, everything shuts down fine.

2.  When I make up a batch file to load the VM on OS boot, and have it do everything in the background, it works great.  When I click on the apps, they open immediately.  However, now when I shut down the host, it does not shut down the the VM and VMware.

What I would like to use is option 2, and have it shutdown the VM and VMware when I shut down the host.  How can I make that happen?

Thanks!
