Error installing tools-windows-8.4.5.exe

During VmWare Workstation 7.1.3 install I receive error message about MSI installation. After install and reboot all works fine, except tools for windows - when I start Win7 VM - I receive message about need to update tools. Download process starts ok, but installing - reports error.

I found and download manually file tools-windows-8.4.5.exe but when I try to install it I receive error message:

-

The MSI 'c:\temp\user\vmware_1291719937\tools-windows.msi' failed.

-

Install generates two log files, I attach them.

What can be source of the problem and how I can fix it?

Oops. No, don't see this. But how this can be, I'm domain administrator with full admin rights on my computer.

This maybe a false or misguiding message - but it is something which should be checked.

I had this problem with my installation of Workstation 7.1.5

I had a MSI error when installing relating to tools-windows.msi not being found in c:\Windows\Installer (and others - tools-netware, tools-solaris etc).

Finally got to the bottom of it.

Search the Registry for whatever files it cannot find.

eg. 'tools-windows'

'tools-netware'

etc

It should find some entries under HKCR\Installer\Products\

When it finds - eg tools-windows - delete the higher-level container in the registry.

I deleted HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\C3839DFF5D1079849A4534FA95A9DE03 for the tools-windows result on my PC.

Delete the registry key folder for each 'missing' or 'corrupt' MSI file.

I think this next bit may not be necessary but before running a repair on your installation, ensure the missing files are present in your \Windows\Installer directory. I ensured there was an MSI and an EXE file for each missing tools installation. I even copied them into the 'Temp' folder.

When that step is complete, install Workstation again. This time select to 'Repair' the installation.

Hopefully it will find all of the files this time. If you have missed any, simply complete the relevant steps above for that file and try the repair again.

You should not get the annoying messages to install or update tools (which didnt work previously) again.
