I've been putting V8 on hold due to the press of work, but am now about ready to upgrade both of my hosts.
Thing is, 7.1.5 is so amazingly stable and relaible (I virtually live in it all day long with a couple workstations running on each host), that I'm reluctant to mess up a good thing, but yet want to remain current. Windows 8 is not a major concern, but will be soon. I'd like to dump Virtual Box and reconsolidate my windows 8 testing into Vmware, since I've been a Vmware customer since the Pleistoscene.
I've watched the Version 8 trouble posts here quickly decline to mostly corner cases, and get the impression its going fairly smoothly.
Since I have to pay for the upgrade, I'd like to ask if its time yet? or should I give it a couple more months to stabalize?
Whats the consensus?
> Whats the consensus?"
I dont think there is a consensus
If you run aWindows host without tons of "if-you-use-me-you-are-safe-and-everything-will-be-fine"-suites testing it yourself is harmless and will cost you a couple of hours only.
Dont upgrade virtual hardware without taking a snapshot first - then switching back to WS 7 is easy
Each to their own, but if you run any 2D VMs (e.g., XP or Vista/7 without Aero) then wait for the next dot release.
Thanks for the clue about 2D VMs. Virtually all of mine are such, and they are not all windows.
I test under Several Linux distros as well.
When you suggest waiting for the next dot release, did you mean 8.n or 8.0.n, or just the next build number?
(I have no problem waiting, VMWare will get my money sooner or later, but I don't really need the drama right now).
The next build (whatever the number) is supposed to fix the 2D performance issue. There are work arounds, but if you are not there yet I'd be inclined to wait.
Cheers.
2D performance issues ?
if I remember right those folks that returned to WS 7 complained about 3d issues ???
You are right; some people were complaining about bad 3D performance, but I have not been able to reproduce that. I tested quite a bit on three different physical hosts and a colleague of mine is also now running WS8 and has only encountered the 2D performance issue as described in this thread and verified/fixed by VMware for the next release.

The 2D performance issue is a context switch issue - if you just run a single 2D VM and don't switch tabs, you will not run into it.
