I'm create a w2k8 64bit virtual machine. What is the best adapter type to use in the vm settings? What about for other o/s installs?

vmxnet2 is legacy from previous ESX versions.

vmxnet3 is the highest performing.

e1000 is most compatible for OS's which might not have VMware Tools available.

In Windows, always go for vmxnet3.

I would use vmxnet3 for any Windows VMs.

Please take note that FT will not work with VMXNET3 (or PVSCSI). < vSphere 4.0 only

If your guest install has the option of vmxnet3, use it

I've encountered some issues using the VMXNET3 adapter with Server 2008 VM's (mostly under ESX/ESXi 4.0)... Not all, but enough to make me watch how they behave closely... Any VM's with problems get slid over to the E1000 adapter and the issues vanish... If you don't need the (internal mostly) 10Gb network ceiling of the VMXNET3 adapter, then go with the E1000 across the board. I've seen Linux VM's have zero issues with the E1000 too (having problems with the VMXNET3 adapter)... I'm also using all Intel NIC's when they're add-on cards (no choice for the onboard's typically being Broadcom in servers)...
