ThinApp Xp to Windows7 or viceversa

I am new to ThinApp and been testing the VMWare ThinApp. So far I'm liking the product. I just need a clear understanding about how things work.

I created a package under the XP machine (all clean machine) with ThinApp software and able to create a package. Run the package under another XP machine and works just fine. However, when I run the same package in the Windows7 Machine then I am getting an error because certain files cannot be access.

I created the same package under Windows7 Machine with ThinApp software. I run the package on another Windows7 machine and works just fine. But I run the package under the XP machine then I get the error.

My understanding is when you create a package, it should run on any Windows platform.

Here's my confusion: VMThinApp only works on the same platform ie xp to xp / windows7 to windows7 only? or this is depending on the application I am trying to package.

Is there a converter that convert the XP thinApp package to Windows7?

If someone can clarify this for me, I certainly appreciate this.

Thank you.

Collin

Hi Collin09,

Welcome to the world of ThinApp.

As per the best practices of capturing applications with ThinApp, the capture should be done on the lowest platform possible, and then used on other platforms. And, generally if you are capturing on XP then that's the right way to go, the resulting ThinApped package should run on Windows 7.

Yes, your understanding is correct.

Can you please give some more information as to which application have you captured with ThinApp on XP and then what is the error you are getting when you execute it on Windows 7?

Thanks

Do you get this dll error just on the app launch and what is the exact error string (including the name of the dll)? On ur Win 7 machine, can you launch Log Monitor utility, then launch the app and when you see the error, then kill the application and then upload the log files (zipping them and then uploading might be better).

Thanks

Hi Collin,

I went through the xlsx file you had uploaded. I am more interested in the "Path not found" stuff, and I think log monitor trace file wouyld be pretty helpful in this case. Please upload the log monitor trace file for me to anlayze.

Thanks

I got a respond from VM Support that NOT all application are supported especially an application that deals with OBDC and.NET (not accessed same way with XP and Windows7). Some application might work but not guaranteed.

Thanks.

Wow, this post is very old. But for me its just the right explanation of the problem i have. I tried to portabilise KLS Backup 2011 Professional program. When i make portable app on xp its working perfectly on any xp machine. When i make portable app on Windows 7 it works perfectly on any Windows 7 machine. But when i use portable application made in XP on Windows 7 machine it apears to work just fine except for my plugins. It must have something to do with the folder structure in Windows 7. Basicly i would have to have 2 versions of the same application on my stick, one for windows xp and one for windows 7 wich isnt that big deal because application isnt that big but i'd like to learn is there any way to make this work with just one version.

And to clear it out, i made it portable this way:

I used merged mode, i chekced for application folders to go in application launcher location (usb...), and i didnt change anything else.

Any help would be appreciated.
