vCenter 5 - SQL 2008 R2 Components Required?

Hi,

I am looking to build an SQL 2008 Standard edition server to host the vCenter database on the same server as vCenter itself...

I cannot find anywhere the minimum requirements I need to install for the SQL component?!

For example do I need such things as:

Full Text Search

Client Tools

Integration Services

Reporting Services etc etc

Is there a VM KB or guide which will tell me?

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&e...

Also You would need SP2, SP1 is not supported

Please award points for helpful/correct answers Smiley Happy

You don't need integration or reporting services for vCenter use.

Integration services is to connect/perform ETL type of transactions, which is not required.

Reporting services may be useful if you plan to write your own reports talking to the vCenter db, but generally speaking, won't be used either.

Client tools is good to have, it will include sql mgmt studio, so you can troubleshoot potential issues with db, otherwise, you have no way to connect and check the status of the db yourself.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the replies...

I take it from what people are saying there is no definitive answer...

This is not much good...

I really wish VMware would help the "little" people...

The only thing required is the database engine.  The specifics after that are documented in the installation guide to include permissions, schema, roles, etc.

All other bells and whistles that are available through the db product are up to you to determine if you need them for your own benefit, as they are not required for vCenter.

Hope that makes sense.
