Fusion insists on resizing its window when mac returns from sleep mode or on initial startup..

i must be missing something as i don't read anyone complainng about this. i run fusion together with spaces such that on the left i have the mac side and on the right the windows side.

i switch between the two with ctrl-left or ctrl-right which is all great. everytime my powerbook goes into sleep mode while on the windows side...

when it returns, together with when i first start up vmware, it insists on resizing the window from maximum (full screen) to some other size with no settings anywhere in sight to fix it.

surely i can't be the only one having this most obvious problem.

naturally, when it resizes the window, i lose the positions of all my windows within the windowsXP side. then i'm forced to resize everything again. how do you get vmware to start in max size

when using spaces?

HELP please.

I'm running Win7 Eval on Fusion without Spaces in OS X 10.6.1, and everytime I start Windows, it appears to cylce through every window dimension I've ever set before finally settling into the last size and position (relative to the full OS X screen) that I always use. This Fusion window cover 90+% of my OS X desktop. I'm fairly certain that this started when I migrated from Vista to Win7 (clean install, not upgrade of Windows - same install of Fusion 2.0.5 / 2.0.6. Mac is a 2.8 Core 2 Dual / 24" screen w/ 4 GB Ram / 2 GB assigned to Fusion. This is mostly just annoying, but I'd love to know where and why it's cacheing all those other dimensions / resolutions and why it cycles through them on startup.

I'm having the same exact problem even without Spaces.

Every time my Powerbook comes back from sleep mode my VMWare Fusion window is resized and it messes up any remote-desktop windows I have open in Windows 7 as well (inside the VMWare window). So I have to resize the VMWare window back to full size and then close and re-open all the remote-desktop windows I had open.

Is there any way to stop VMWare from insisting on resizing itself?

Anyone?

It's getting really annoying to do this on a daily basis...

Every time my Powerbook comes back from sleep mode my VMWare Fusion...

VMware Fusion is only supported on Intel based Macs not a PowerBook.

The only suggestion I have is to not allow Mac OS X to sleep by setting its hibernatemode to 0.

In a Terminal...

pmset -a hibernatemode 0

The normal hibernatemode is 3.

The other option would be to use a utility that could automatically resize/reposition windows, although I do not have any recommendations.

Sorry, MacBook Pro

Thanks for the suggestion, but seems like a blunt one...anything more targeted like a VMWare Fusion setting?

If there was anything in VMware Fusion that could control this I would have already mentioned it.  This is an OS X issue since it is the OS that is sleeping.

I don't consider it to be "blunt" and it is nothing to script changing this on the fly so as to not let the Mac sleep when running Virtual Machines and change it back when not running them.  Sometimes you just have to do what can be done to workaround things. Smiley Wink

thanks I guess...not sure what to say, no other windows are resizing, just the VMWare one

I guess it all depends on which version of Mac OS X and what Applications as I've had more then VMware Fusion be bumped out of Full Screen View if/when Mac OS X goes to sleep.  If you're using Mac OS X Lion then from what I've read apparently VMware didn't (or couldn't) make VMware Fusion fully or properly compatible with new Full Screen feature in Mac OS X Lion yet apparently the competition was able to do so.  I'm only saying this based on what I've read, haven't tried comparing this aspect nor am I using VMware Fusion 4 on my primary system.

The bottom line is if/when a given application is not responding to a given condition to ones liking and there are no controls within the application, as with VMware Fusion in this particular case, then until something changes within the Application it becomes a workaround scenario.  Since the trigger is the OS going to sleep the workaround solution becomes controlling the OS and how/when it goes to sleep or utilizing 3rd party utilities if available and this is what I was trying to provide to help with the issue regardless of how ideal it may be, given that the choices are limited.

I really do appreciate your efforts...I will try what you suggested and see how it goes.

If you learn of a better solution I hope you can post it here...I'll check back periodically.

Hello,

So this fix (setting hibernatemode to 0) seemed to work for a few days, but just now the window resized itself again and caused all the same problems I mentioned above. So looks like the hibernatemode work-around doesn't work unfailingly.

You may also need to adjust various Sleep settings in Energy Saver in System Preferences.

Again not ideal, just additional controls.

Have you opened a VMware Support Request on the issue?

I have a different problem with window resizing - where the window is resized if the main monitor's resolution changes. Is there a way to add a "no-resize" attribute, to lock the window size?

I'm getting the same issue when using Fusion 11.5.1 on Catalina using an external monitor.  I'm trying to figure out which VM settings or vmx edits will stop this.
