Can't create virtual machine with HD over 256 GB

Need to create a virtual machine with disc space of 600 GB but VC would not let me.

The error message states the following:

The disk capacity entered was not a properly formed number or was out of range. It has been replace with the nearest acceptable value.

I click OK and I see it drops down to 256 GB. What am I missing here?

Hi,

HINT: probably your BlockSize was choosen to low when creating the VMFS3 volume.

With the blocksite comes the max filesize.

Block size Maximum disk capacity

1Mb 256Gb

2Mb 512Gb

4Mb 1024Gb

8Mb 2048Gb

You are right about the block size.

Now is there a way for me to increase it?

You can modify the blocksize of a LUN, but only by reformatting. Obviously, this means everything will be lost on that LUN. Otherwise, you will have to span the .vmdk file across multiple LUNs.

Reformat your VMFS with the block size you need to get to your max file size.

-Remove Datastore

-Add Datastore, after you name it, you select the block size. Easy to move quick and miss it.

You cannot "increase" an existing vmfs to a larger block size if that is what you're wondering.

HI,

the block size can only be set before you format the LUN.

So you have to backup all the data of that specific LUN before reformatiing it.

I am experiencing the same issue. my only problem is that I gurrently have data on the storeage unit already and can not migrate them to another disk.

Well, theres no real way around it.  Find another disk to backup to (or use Amazon S3 or something).

Thanks. I just want vmware to know we are not happy about this. I believe another option needs to be look at.
