Can't install Update Manager 5.0 on Windows 2008 R2. Someone did?

Hi,

I'm trying to install VUM 5.0 on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 box, but the setup keeps failing saying

"This product can only be installed on Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008 or above."

well...this is quite strange, this is a Windows 2008 R2 x64 box. It is Domain Controller but I'm not installing vCenter (I'm using vCenter Server Appliance).

In VUM 5.0 documentation it is written only "The Update Manager server requires a 64-bit Windows system." and nothing more, well there is further a note saying "For detailed information about supported operating systems and database formats, see "vSphere Compatibility Matrixes." but I cannot find any Compatibility Matrix for vSphere 5.0 apart from http://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide/sim/interop_matrix.php which, by the way, does not list any Operating System compatibility for Update Manager.

I can only find this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=2005084&sl...

which says:

These operating systems are supported for Update Manager and the Update Manager Download Service:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64-bit
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64-bit
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64-bit
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64-bit

but as fair as I know there is no SP2 for R2. So would this mean it will only be supported on R2 platform when SP2 will be released? Or does VMware have tested it on a non public SP2 update?

I attach a LOG file of the failed installation, whenever it can be of any help.

Thanks,

Nicola

ya I need someone that tested 5.0 or that can give me a workaround, maybe it's just to edit .ini file to disable some checks.

ok the problem was that the MSI installer check the value of the property MsiNTProductType to be = 3, but in my case this is = 2 since it is a "Windows 2000 domain controller and later" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa370329(v=vs.85).aspx).

Update Manager should work also on Domain Controller, so this appear to be a BUG.

Hi NicolasB,

try modify installer of Update Manager according to this procedure:

http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-16950

with MsiNTProductType = 2 ...

obviously I did modify the MSI installer to reflect my server config when I found the cause of the issue.
