Windows 8 on Workstation 7.1.4?

Will the latest Windows 8 Developer Preview that Microsoft released run on Workstation 7.1.4?  I'm downloading the ISO right now, but would like to prepare for when it's done.

Thanks!

I haven't tried this so i can't comment one way or the other for certain... but there's only one way to find out!

I'd first select "Windows 7" as the operating system during the VM creation and see how you go from there...

Didn't work for me.  Tried the 64-bit version with developers tools and I get an error/prompt to upload support data.

Crashes here too. I assume it's because Windows 8 requires ACPI 2.0 which is not supported by workstation 7.x. It should be supported in Workstation 8, but nobody knows when that one will become final Smiley Sad

Tried to load en_windows_developer_preview_with_developer_tools_and_apps_x64_dvd_735220.iso on Workstation 6.5.5:

*** VMware Workstation internal monitor error ***
vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/intr/apic.c:1796
Please report this problem by selecting menu item Help > VMware on the Web > Request Support, or by going to the Web page .... Please provide us with the log file (...\Windows 8\vmware.log) and the core file(s) (...\Windows 8\vmware-core[0-1].gz, ...\Windows 8\vmware64-core[0-1].gz, ...\Windows 8\vmware-vmx-8248.dmp).
If the problem is repeatable, please select 'Run with debugging information' in the Options panel of Virtual Machine Settings. Then reproduce the incident and file it according to the instructions.
To collect data to submit to VMware support, select Help > About and click "Collect Support Data". You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.
We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.
We appreciate your feedback,

Can't file an incident report.

Hi,

VMware Workstation 8.x just got released, see the release notes here: Workstation 8.0 Release Notes

There's no mention of support for Windows 8 yet and I'm not sure if VMware got windows 8 earlier from Microsoft as we did, but your best chances to get it to work is with "the latest and greatest" version of Workstation.

Hope this helps,

I can confirm that Windows 8 installs on Workstation 8 but not on 7.1.4.

dnetz, can you share your settings?

After upgrading to Workstation 8 (final) I created a new machine using generic 64 bit system template.  While the preview installs, during the setup it gets to 69% on driver setup and fails out (with a new form of bluescreen apparently) complaining about "DPC_WATCHDOG violation".

My host is an Intel i7-2820QM.

I chose the custom wizard, highest hardware level, install operating system later, Windows 7 x64 as the Guest OS, 1 core, 2500MB RAM, no network, LSI Logic SAS controller, 40 GB SCSI disk. I removed the floppy and sound card before installing but that's cause I don't need them. Vmware tools installs fine. There are howver some graphic bugs on my machine that makes the screen black/white and striped at times, but it goes away if I switch between VM's in Workstation.

Host is Windows 7 x64 on an AMD Athlon Dual Core 5200+ processor.

Hope it helps!

Thanks dnetz, that did it.

I think I tripped myself up trying for the Express setup, choosing Windows 7 x64, and then thinking the license stuff wouldn't work.

You can use VirtualBox if you don't want to use Workstation 8.  It runs fine on VB...

Just saw that workstation 8 was available.  I'm going to upgrade and give that a roll...

Try selecting Windows Server 8 as OS instead of Windows 7. The product key box you are seeing is from the "easy install" option.

There's no easy install option for Windows8 yet. Alternatively I think you can also just reboot and disconnect the floppy drive which has the unattend answer file on it.

Couldn't get Win8 to work on 7.1.4, but Win8 does install and run in 8.0.  However, choose "Other" as the operating system, so that VMware doesn't try to use an answer file, which caused problems on my system.  My host is 64-bit Win7 Ultimate on a Core i7.

The 32-bit Win8 had some video issues with the 8.0 VMware tools, but other drivers from the VMware Tools installed OK.  Just to be safe, I also used an IDE disk instead of SCSI, deleted the sound card, and deleted the printer, but I don't know if all this was actually necessary. Even though "Other" was selected during initial install, you can go back afterwards and change it to "Windows 7" in order to get the Tools installed.

A problem I've not figured out yet is how to get Win8 to recognize or use the VMware network interface.  I've tried it both with and without the VMware Tools version of the NIC driver.  Anyone find a trick for this yet?  Does it work with the 64-bit Win8 version?

   Good Luck

RandomJoe, I'm wondering if you overthought things a bit...

I chose Windows 7 x64 instead of Other, and I didn't do the various deletions you did.  This seemed to make sense, as Microsoft stated that Windows 8 should run on any Windows 7 machine.

I chose the recommended SCSI disk hardware and didn't do anything otherwise special, and it is able to access the network via simple Bridged networking.  It all came up rather easily and directly.

The install went very smoothly indeed.  Windows 8 is pretty slick!

Removing the Floppy removed the error, installed perfectly after that.  Thanks for the suggestion.
