2 iscsi targets

Dear,

I have a vsphere essentials plus installation based on 2 ESX Hosts and one iSCSI storage.

I want to add an extra iSCSI storage to my vpshere 4 U1 configuration.

Can I normally live add a extra iscsi target or do I better put ESX host one in maintenance mode, run all vm's from one ESX host, try to configure 2 Iscsi target on the host in maintenance mode?

If I can connect two iscsi targets to one ESX host, what is the best method (fastest) to migrate all vm's? (storage devices are not equal or not able to replicate directly)

Using SCP? Other ways?

Kind regards,

Kenny

Hi Kenny,

Yes you can add another iSCSI volume to a live ESX host, on your iSCSI storage, present the new volume to the desired host, and then do a rescan of the iSCSI HBA to pick up the new volume. From there, create a new VMFS and away you go, no interruption to your live environment, and no need for maintenance mode.

If you dont have access to storage vMotion, then you'll have to power down the VM you want to migrate and then you could either copy the VMs folder using the vSphere client, or use SCP to copy the VM between datastores. Not sure if there is any performance difference between the two methods, so maybe try both and see which is easier/more efficient for you

Sorry just realised i read your question wrong. You can add another iSCSI target also to your ESX host while running live, just perform a rescan of the iSCSI HBA after you've added the new target, and continue on your way...
