I need to install vCenter Server 64-bits for use with ESXi. I installed a clean version of Windows 7 Professional 64-bits, but couldn't install vCenter Server on it. The installation file says it needs Windows Server or Windows XP SP2 64-bits. Is it really impossible to install vCenter Server Essentials 4.1 on a Windows 7 system.
Its not supported ,check this kb
As mentioned by john23, it's not supported to install vCenter Server on Window 7.
For supported configurations, always refer to the Compatibility Matrix at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf
(OS <-> vCenter Server compatibility starting on page 16)

Welcome to the community.
For vSphere 4.1 you can use a 64-bit version of Windows XP.
For vSphere 5 you can use the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance instead.

I just upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and would like to do the same with my PC (currently on Vista). anyway, does Vista is supported or just Win XP?
I have used Windows 2008 R2 64bit as base operating system for my VMware vCenter Server. As vCenter Server 5.0 requires a 64-bit operating system and cannot be installed on a 32-bit operating system.
These operating systems are supported:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64bit
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64bit
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter SP2 64bit
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise or Datacenter R2 SP2 64bit
