patching esxi hosts

We have esxi4.1 build 260247 on 3 hosts.

What is the easieast way to patch hosts. I have heard of the ESXI configurator utility, and use it for making backups of my hosts configs, but never used it for updates.

I'm just looking for the quickest and easiest way to do this.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Update Manager is on the vCenter Server installation DVD/ISO.

Do you have shared storage? If not, you cannot update the host on which vCenter Server is running with the Update Manager.

Hello.

If you don't have Update Manager, check out my instructions for using vihostupdate.

Good Luck!

If you have a few patches you can apply manually with esxupdate .

Download patch send to host or datastore shared and apply using esxupdate

for esxi you can install the latest firmware and that should have all the previous fixes. for installing esxi 4.1 patches supported options are rcli(vcli), update manager.

Yes, we have a san, thanks.

I'll grab it off of the CD then and throw it on the Vsphere VM.

I'll vmotion all the vm's to other hosts before the update and place the host in maint mode.

Thanks!

Souns good.

Make sure you read the installation guide for the Update Manager. A quick hint: Before installing it, create a new database on the SQL Server (e.g. VIM_VUMDB) and also create a 32-bit ODBC (System) connection to this database.

Hi there,

UM or vihostupdate. Either tool shoud do the job.

vihostupdate is more a one-to-one update tool so if you have 3 hosts to upgrade I would recommend UM.
