Vmware fusion and Lion OS X USB Support

Hi Everyone,

First post here.  I upgraded my iMac to Lion and installed Fusion and latest update.  the only problem I am having is when I try to install my jump drive it will not install the software and see the drive (running Windows 7 with all of the latest updates).  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help - Tim

I'm also having issues with USB support using Fusion 3.1.3 and 10.7 (Lion).  Everything used to work perfectly (on 2011 MBP thunderbolt)  before updating but now when I try to do RS232 > USB I'm getting timeouts.

Is this a known issue?  I have another macbook pro (early unibody) which is using the same image running Fusion 3.1.3 with 10.6 and it's working perfect.

I have the same problem.  Mac OS 10.7, VMware Fusion 3.1.3 with Windows XP.  My USB devices worked just fine before the lion install, and now they don't work.  I have tried rebooting, and disconnecting and reconnecting the devices both physically and through the icon in the vmware tray, but USB just doesn't seem to be working properly in vmware.

This is a pretty big deal!  If USB decives don't work in Fusion with OSX Lion that basically make it's useless to me.  Please keep this thread active.  If Fusion users are NOT having problems with USB and Lion please let us know.

FWIW I'm not having any USB related issues with VMware Fusion 3.1.3 and Mac OS X Lion with any of my Virtual Machines, Windows 7 included.

Then maybe it's just an issue if you are running Win XP.  I wonder what could be different about win7?

So far I had one problem with a thumb drive, but was resolved with a Win7 restart and now see's it fine. I had been running in Suspend mode since the upgrade to Lion OS.

I have tested several USB devices since and all working fine. NexStar dual Bay Hard Drive Dock, Thumb Drive, Logitech USB camera.

I am running Fusion 3.1.3, Win7 Enterprise.

I think it might be advantages for users having problems with USB devices to state what Windows OS they are running.

It might help to identify if it's specific to XP, Vista, etc.

All my USB devices have stopped working after Lion upgrade. Running the latest VMWARE Fusion (3.1.4) - so clearly something is broken ....

It's not good.

Have you uninstalled/reinstalled VMware Fusion and or VMware Tools?  Note that uninstalling/reinstalling VMware Fusion does not remove the Virtual Machines.  BTW... The latest is VMware Fusion 3.1.3.

I am having the same issue with Windows XP and VM Fusion 3.1.3.  Has anyone found a solution to this issue?

You are correct it is 3.1.3 and no I do not have time to uninstall and reinstall unless I know it is going to work. I've fallen back to a couple MBPs for my work until there is an official patch or advisory on what to do. thanks

Are you serious, you don't have time, it takes less then 10 minutes and it is suggested and recommended by VMware.

"For the best experience, reinstall Fusion after upgrading to Lion."  Have a look at: VMware Fusion 3 support for Mac OS X Lion (10.7)

Yes I am serious and all I was asking for was an official page that this was the best approach, which apparently already exists so I will try it.

Just reinstalled Fusion 3.1.3 and full USB support is back!  Guess WMWare should post a sticky/technote on this issue.

Yup I did an install over the existing one and it fixed all the issues.

Whether or not there is an official page is irrelevant!  There is nothing whatsoever wrong with uninstalling/reinstalling VMware Fusion and or VMware Tools in an attempt to correct issues, when indicated, especially after an OS upgrade.  It's just plain old common sense! Smiley Wink

Well, I've reinstalled everything, several times, and I still have USB connection issues. I"m running a VM with Windows 7, and the connectivity problems don't seem to start until Windows boots, so it could be an issue with VMWare tools. In any event, it's clearly still a problem - I just hope that VMWare recognizes that they have an issue that needs to be fixed. I will be contacting support.

Same for me.  Uninstalled, reinstalled, still on version 3.1.3 of vmware and using Windows XP.  USB devices don't work properly.  My USB thumb drive says its connecting, then the light goes out, and it doesn't appear in my drive list.
