Similar problem, no LAN or High-speed internetconnection after "upgrading" to 7.1.4 build 385536.  Tried reparing everything in sight and re-booting all, etc. Host computer internet connection works.

you have more then one physical nic so you must disable automatic bridging in Virtual Network Editor
yes - I know that sounds bizarre - but automatic only works on one-nic hosts

please note: every update of Workstation resets the bridged-network configuration to "automatic bridging" so first thing to do after any update is fix the network-config with Virtual Network Editor

when you have bridging configured correctly - try again
if it still does not work - disable all involved firewalls or security suites

Extract the "Virtual Network Editor" (vmnetcfg.exe) from the VMware Player installation package.

To  do so run the VMware Player package with "/e .\extract", extract the  files from network.cab and copy them to the VMware Player directory.

ok, so using Workstation i was able to see that VMnet0 is set to auto-bridging. I do not see anywhere where i can change the value to anything else. If i select auto settings it asks me which adaptor to select. I did only select one connection but i still dont see where i can disable auto-bridging. sorry for the noobish question

I thought you were using VMware Player?  Did you install Workstation instead of extracting the Virtual Network Editor (vmnetcfg.exe) from the network.cab file?

Anyway click the list box that is showing as Automatic and select the target Network Adapter then it is no longer using automatic bridging! Smiley Wink

Hello All

Thank you.  I have been watching and waiting.  I appear to be back to "Normal," after making the suggested change and repairing the connection using the microsoft option in the VM's status menu.

i did install workstation, selected edit>virtual network settings and then slected Automatic settings. from there i only selected my broadcom 1gb ethernet connection. Applied the change and clicked ok.

I then ran the VM and i still cant access the internet, the funny thing is I have a vpn client on the virtual machine and if i connect the vpn i can get online. This is driving me nuts!

What else can I try to get this thing working? Thanks everyone for the help!

HI,

To get my system going after rebooting everything I had to right click on the various network connections and select repair.

I also had to turn off the host and VM firewalls before repairing.  After VM had a IP Address, I re-enabled the firewalls

I have the same issue after the 7.1.4 upgrade was performed on my Win7x64 host. My WinXPx32 VM cannot see anything outside the VM when in host-only mode.  This worked previously just fine.

I have two network adapters on my laptop: wireless and wired.  I disabled the wired adapter and in the Virtual Network Editor changed VMNet0 to use the wireless adapter instead of automatic.  My VM is still unable to see anything outside the VM.

What I don't understand is if the host-only option is a private network for communication only between the guest and host then why does it matter what VMNet0 is set to?

The NAT option works fine.  With it the VM can access the Internet and the host.  But I don't want my VM to access the Internet so I really need the host only option working.

HRTKD - this is my exact situation also.  I upgraded to 7.1.4 the other day.  I have several development VM's that I run on my laptop.  They worked fine connecting to our corporate domain until the upgrade.  Now they will not connect.  I can log on with cached credentials and see that the VM machine's network adapter shows disconnected.

My host is Win 7 64bit.  My guests (VM's) are all Windows XP SP3 32bit.

I have tried the ideas posted through out this thread.  I have edited my virtual network settings using the virtual network editor and no longer use automatic for my Bridged connection.  My host has two NIC's (one wired and one wireless), at work I use the wired connection.  I have disabled the wireless so that it does not interfer.

I can not make connections using NAT either.

Deleting my VM's and rebuilding is not a good solution, as it will take me days or longer to rebuild.

It seems to be something wierd with the upgrade.  It is a really huge issue.  Anyone else have ideas.  Anyone from VMware out there that knows what has happened and how to fix?

Thanks

Brad

I opened up a case with VMware, as I own a license with support.  I have not heard anything back yet and the issue is preventing me from working further on a developlment project.

I have therefore reverted back to version 7.1.3 (by ininstalling 7.1.4 and installing the older known good version).  The problem is not present in 7.1.3.
