Do you mean Ubuntu 10.04? That is the latest edition if I am not mistaken.
You can download the latest version of VMware Workstation for Linux (which is 7.1.3) at http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/wkst_713_lx/ZGolYnRld3diZGplcA==
No I mean 11.04 alpha bro, the absoloute latest version of Ubuntu.
Well, the link I provided is the latest version of VMware Workstation for Linux that is available. It may work with Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha, however Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha is not currently supported for use with VMware Workstation for Linux.
You may run into issues such as the pre-compiled modules which are shipped with Workstation not being compatible/suitable for use on a Ubuntu 11.04 system.
Currently the latest version of Ubuntu that is supported for use with VMware Workstation for Linux 7.1.3 by VMware Technical Support is Ubuntu 10.04. If you are running Workstation in a production environment and looking to be supported by VMware, then Ubuntu 10.04 is the version that you should use.
If this is referring to a test system, then you could try downloading and installing Workstation for Linux 7.1.3 on your 11.04 Alpha system and see how things go for you.
However, as already stated, Workstation for Linux 7.1.3 has not been tested/certified for use with Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha so the resulting experience may not be as good or as stable as that of a supported Ubuntu 10.04 environment. But your own installation tests will tell you more anyway.
Have fun and enjoy!!
Thanks for the advice. Its just a test system, I have heard of people successfully running VMware Workstation on 11.04 alpha but they had to apply a patch to get the modules to correctly load into the kernel.
Maybe you can find additional information in the following?
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/286119

Graham - no offense intended - but are you sure you are up to date with your info ?
Without Noels great work and his patches installing WS 7.1.3 would fail on AFAIK all newer Linux that use a kernel higher then 2.6.35
the advice " just try it" is good for VirtualBox - but not for VMware

Unfortunately, Graham, the referenced thread points out that even after patching the kernel modules, VMware fails to work in Natty (see also), and not in code to which we, the supporting community, have access, else we would help to fix it.
Got a phone call from customer support, I have put through a technical ticket, so hopefully they will create a patch for the latest kernel shortly.

For the Nth time, the Natty problem is not kernel related. We (and by "we", I mean the VMware user community) have existing patches for all current kernels, through to the most current 2.6.38. The problem with Natty is not kernel related, as evidenced by the fact that I am running the same 2.6.38-1 kernel for Natty with Maverick, using our current 2.6.38 patch (referenced previously).
Indeed the problem is NOT with the 2.6.38 patch which wroks perfectly on openSUSE 11 .4 kerenel 2.6.38-vanilla.

2) when running theh corrected script against the 2.6.38 patch on Natty kernel 2.6.38-7-generic the process completesd succesffuly after installing the .bundle but the GUI doesn't come up instead the following rocedssesprocess are running according to ps -A
5890 ? 00:00:00 vmware-usbarbit
5959 ? 00:00:00 vmnet-bridge
5968 ? 00:00:00 vmnet-dhcpd

5985 ? 00:00:00 vmnet-natd
5987 ? 00:00:00 vmnet-netifup
Thus ther eis a problem - apparently not with Xorg drivers but something else as a developer from the Ubuntu team ? noted somewhere in these convoluted threads (s).

Wait for Natty developers to release the correction they say works internally.

Do you have a reference to "a developer from the Ubuntu team ? noted somewhere"? I don't recall any such comment from an Ubuntu developer. Also, what do you mean by "Wait for Natty developers to release the correction they say works internally"? If there were a Natty fix, it would be available to us testers. If the fix is VMware internal, that's not a Natty fix. Natty is Open Source; VMware is closed source.
Sorry Noel. I did see it somewhere on the Forum but didn't mark it as the video problems was apparent and noted seeveral times as all process were running (except for a video process when VMware WS was launched in Natty after your 2.6.38 patch.
Actually the relevant ones were perhaps not launched as a process because the following is what appears in Debian 6.0 sid (2.6.32-xen kernel) as output from sudo ps -A I posted the process I saws when the GUI did not come up in Natty - theyi did NOT include vmwarfe itself!!
8727 ? 00:00:00 vmware
8753 ? 00:00:00 vmware-tray
8792 ? 00:00:00 vmware-unity-he
The post seemed to definitely be from the Ubuntu team - hence the reference to internal fixes for "glx issues" I - forget ". He said it would be made public - perhaps in a the beta release?? - he didn't say. I really don't know how to search for the post since the number of threads and responses on the issues with Natty and 2.6.38 kernel are too numerous and its not clear if r they refer to the original post or the last.
Sorry for any misunderstanding here. Perhaps WS will work with Natty after release the end of April - no doubt with your patch thoough
