PowerCLI or VIToolkit or Both?

Hello,

Recently I've found a lot of information (and scripts) around VIToolkit (for example the community powerpack), but actually I'm using PowerCLI and did not try VIToolkit yet.

What's the difference between the two staffs? Do I need VIToolkit? Is there some features not provided by PowerCLI?

Thanks for any clarification,

Emiliano

Hello, 3mime-

"VI Toolkit" is the product name of previous versions of what is now called "PowerCLI".

PowerCLI has all of the worthwhile functionality of previous versions, and more.  I cannot think of an example that would call for staying on the older version, save maybe for historical testing or supporting an old environment (if even that).

So, the latest release of "PowerCLI" should be supergreat in serving your needs, I believe.

Pretty much the same thing.

The newer versions have new CMDLETs though that may not work with older hosts (e.g. Get-EsxCli and the Get-EsxTop)

That said, the new versions ca nstill fully manage your down-level hosts, so go ahead and upgrade and take advantage of new features.

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

Hi, thanks for the answers.

I had a final confirmation about the fact that with PowerCLI (and PowerGUI) I've all what I need, reading at the current requirements of the community power pack:

  • PowerShell V2
  • PowerCLI 4.0 U1 or later version
  • vEcoShell (Recommended) or PowerGUI with the VMware PowerPack

Thanks a lot!

A small remark, be aware that vEcoShell is end of life. Afaik no further development will be done.

So I think it is better you start with PowerGui from day 1.
