VMware won't find new LUN from storage

Hi!

I have here a vmware vsphere solution with some blades running vmware esx and esxi.

A storage system is connected to these blades through a FC switch. But I am having a big problem adding new LUNs to vmware esx because sometimes they are listed but sometimes they aren't.

In order to add new LUN, I have to click "Rescan all" and "Refresh" buttons from "configuration > storage" a bunch of times, wait a while, click on them again and so on... until new presented LUN shows up in the list.

Both "FC Adapter Ports WWN" from blades are correctly added into storage control of each host. All configuration made in the storage appears to be correct. I'm guessing there is something wrong with vmware.

What could be wrong?

see attached images for screenshots.

Regards,

This sometimes happen when, A) this is the first presentation to your ESX(i) Hosts from that array. Usually a reboot will fix this, and subsequent presentations only require a rescan of the storage adapters.  B) when trying to add storage from vCenter. (not sure if it's a bug, but it's an issue).  Try to add storage by directly connecting to your ESX(i) Host.

I have seen this issue many times in the past with HP as well. Even with SRM you need to set a setting so that SRM rescans the HBAs twice as other wise the failover fails. As far as I am concerned it is an issue on the EVA side, but I don't know what/why. I learned to live with it.

Both blade enclosure and storage are from HP.

What is SRM?

Sorry, VMware Site Recovery Manager. A product to automate Disaster Recovery procedures. Anyway, with or with HP blades attached I have seen this issue happen. It might be worth contacting HP about it, but I am fairly certain it isn't VMware related.

Finally, I could get the LUN added to a virtual machine as a "raw device mapping". There is a problem when trying to migrate this VM between hosts using through vmotion. I tought it was because I was using a physical mapping instead of a virtual one. Now that I'm using a virtual raw device mapping, the problem still occurs. See image attached.

I supposed this has something to do with the intermittent appearance of the LUN in the hosts.
