Hi
I'm trying to play some older 3D games with VMware, however i can't enable hardware acceleration in them. I've tried 2 games. The game "Nomad Soul" gives me an error: "DirectX error: Unable to create a texture format compatible with this game.". This only happens when i use Primary Display Driver, however when i play with software rendering i can only choose low resolutions and the game is too hard to play because the screen is too small (i think VMware can't stretch the screen?).
The second game i tried is called "Nocturne". This game simply says "No 3D hardware detected" in options. It plays fine in software mode, but the same resolution problem prevents me from enjoying the game.
So my question is, am i doing something wrong? I think i've setup VMware correctly because i can run the hardware tests in dxdiag fine. Is there any chance that hardware acceleration would work in future versions, or is there something i'm missing here?

Well if you have a Windows host, just run the game on the host OS not in a VM, wouldn't that be easier, and faster? VM's are not really good for games you know .....
These older games don't work well on new systems, i can't start Nocturne at all in Win7.
If the dxdiag tests run then 3D acceleration is available. Do you get the spinning green DirectX cube?
We'll have to reproduce this issue with the games and investigate.
Yes, i do get the spinning cube on all Direct3D versions.
Have you got any results?

Like I said VM's are not good for games, I found this forum:

You should get it working under Windows 7.
