VMware converter breaks IISRES.DLL (IIS Admin)

Hi,
I am trying to convert a Microsoft Virtual  Machine (VPC) to a VMware virtual machine to use with VMFusion 3.x.The  Machine converts fine, but when i start it, the IIS is not able to run/start.  The error i am getting is:
"C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\IISRES.DLL is either  not designed to work on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the  program again using original installation media or contact system  admin."When I try to start the IISADMIN service, it fails due to the DLL  error.The IISADMIN is working just fine on the Microsoft VPC. Apparently  it breaks when i convert it to a VMFusion virtual machine.Help?

do you still have the file in the specified path ?

maybe it helps to replace it with a known-to-work copy from the VirtualPC ?

I wonder if converter would touch that file ? - I doubt so ...

I agree with  Ulli because I also doubt that the converter process would touch the file. Does it work on the original machine?.

Did you run a cold clone or a hot clone?

i would suggest doing a coldclone and that would ensure all files will be intact. the faster would would be copying the missing file over.

Hi,

When you convert the server I would suggested stopping all the service's that are not needed during the migration process (virus, IIS etc.). When the services have been stopped then make sure you set them to started when the server has completed the migration.

Doing  this will make sure that the IIS is not running and will stop any possible corruption of files.

This is all very easy to do through the converter tool but if you need any further advise then please let me know.

I still have the file, but since it's a system file, Windows does not allow me to delete/rename/replace it.

It's the DLL that controls the IIS Admin service, so  i can't do anything to it even if log in as admin. If you know of any way i can get windows to allow me to replace that file, i think my problem will be solved.

I am doing  cold clone. I am converting a .vmc file to a .vmx file. Therefore no services are running when i am doing the conversion.

The IIS ADMIN works perfectly well on the original VPC (.vmc)

boot the VM into your favorite Windows LiveCD - then replacing the file is no problem at all

Don't have a copy of Windows LiveCD and $80 is a bit high for me to spend on something that should work with no problems... 😞

Any other ideas?

The registered version costs $80. I tried the demo version and although it has limitation in how much KBs you can copy/move, i was able to rename the old iisres.dll and replace it with the one from the machine that was working.
