Import machine - never loads vCenter Conveter

I am trying to use the import machine action in vCenter to migrate a phyiscal server into a VM.

However when I click on import machine I get the following error message:

Cannot connect to VMware vCenter Converter server. Unable to establish server connection, resason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed bcause connected host has failed to respond. (10060)

I can use the stand alone client to import machines with no problems.

Also there was a point a few weeks ago that I could launch Converter from within vCenter. No idea why now its not opening up. I have the following opened on the vmware firewall:

Incoming:

CIM Secure Server

SSH

CIM SLP

vSphere Web Access

CIM Server

Automated Availability Manager

Outgoing:

vCenter Update Manager

FT

VMware vCenter Agent

CIM SLP

VMware Consolidated Backup

NTP

Automated Availability Manager

Thoughts??

Hi,

this error indicates that your Client machine (from which you invoke Import) has lost connection to the Converter Server machine.

Check if your Server is still running and if not - start the services and try to call Import wizard again.

Hi,

Check out your DNS service. If there is any problem with DNS, you can get some issues with vCenter Plugins (like Converter).

In this case, vSphere Client cannot to connect to vCenter Converter service on vCenter Server. So, you have to check out the desktop you are using with vSphere Cliente can resolve the FQDN of vCenter Server.)

I have the vi client loaded on the same server that vCenter is installed. I logged into that server and launched vcenter. I tried converter, same thing message, so its not my desktop vi client having trouble communicating.

I verified DNS on the server, vcenter, the VMHOST, my workstation. DNS is operating properly, and all systems can resolve the server names correctly.

You should check Converter services on your vCenter Converter Server machine.

They are:

- VMware vCenter Converter Integrated Server

- VMware vCenter Converter Integrated Worker

Even if they are running, I recommend you to restart them both. Then try again to invoke the Import wizard on your Client machine.

Let me know what is the result.
