Shut down physical desktop when shutting down virtual desktop

Hi,

Does anubody know how I can make it happen that when I give a shutdown command on a virtual desktop not only the virtual desktop shuts down but also the physical desktop?

I have VMware View 4.5 with Windows XP Virtual as well physical.

Tx!

Paddy

The reverse is more plausible. You shutdown the desktop first, and when the shutdown sequence starts it will notify the VM to shutdown, and the physical machine should wait to shutdown until all processes have stopped.

The problem with the VM, there is no connection, so you have to run a script, the problem there is if you initiate the script Windows behaves differently and may not wait enough time to shutdown, so you have to make a script inside the VM to start the desktop shutdown, wait about 5 minutes, then shutdown.

you can do this by shutdown /f /m /n wait in seconds

do shutdown /? will tell you exactly all the parameters.

Well, thats not possible because we want to use the Virtual Desktop as shell. So users cannot use or see the local OS.......

Any other suggestions?

Tx. So far!

or im sure the powershell crowd can come up with something. I do know there is a pearl script command called Waitfor or something similar.

Well virtual machines cannot shutdown the host.. they cannot "see" the local OS either.

The script I mentioned is a REMOTE command, doesn't matter if you can "see" the local Os or not, if it's reachable by network it will work, even if all you do is give them a user on that machine with rights to shutdown.

Why do you need to shutdown the host anyway, kinda defeats the whole intent of VIRTUAL machines, doesn't it?

I found a blog where this issue is mentioned:

http://blogs.vmware.com/view/2009/02/vmware-view-client-as-a-shell-for-xpe-and-xp-pro-clients.html

We are going to make a script and will see if it is going to work.

Why we want to turn of the fat clients? Green IT policy from the customer. In the future they will buy thin clients instead of the fat clients they have now.
