Speed up Windows 7 first time logon

Hello,

We have a Pool of Windows 7 Ent. VM's, the first time a user logs in it comes up with the "Preparing Desktop" and of course after they log off it gets reverted to snapshot, so the next time they log on it goes thru the whole "Preparing Desktop" again.

This is taking a significant time, is there a way to just have it load a generic profile or any way it can speed up the process so the user doesn't have to wait so long the first time around?

Thank you,

Daniel Schmidt

In XP we would put as much configuation as we could into the default user profile to cut down on what happens during first login. Also check out the Windows 7 optimization guide to see if anything there can be of assistance http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-View-OptimizationGuideWindows7-EN.pdf

Hello,

thank you for the Article, it seems to speed up the VM however the inital first time logon is still taking to long.

From the time you first logon it goes to the "Welcome" screen then to to "Preparing your Desktop" it takes about 1 minute, we want to bring that down to 15-20 seconds.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Yeah, you would need to find out what it's loading and try to offset that by including it into some sort of default profile or setup a roaming profile type solution so that a new profile isn't generated everytime

So pre-login. Use a template, do ALL the preparing welcome messages in the template, so when the VM comes up users don't see it.

Then change the group policy to leave the ancillary stuff off, so users WON'T see it.

RParker: How would this work? We have over 1000 users and anyone of them could be logging in, how would we pre-log them in?

this isnt something you can really change unless you have the user profiles created somewhere .. when a user logs in 1st time on an windows OS it creates a user profile unless one exists .. this has nothing to do with View really but is basic windows functionality.

use some kind of userprofile management like liquidware or any other 3rd party and harvest your userprofiles before you migrate them to View, then your user logons is way faster (providing your user profiles is managed properly Smiley Happy)

for whatever its worth.... ive got both XP and win7 vms in our view 5 environment (from 4.6)... for XP i cut time a lot by deleting the below reg key... testing with win7 but my login was 17 seconds which is pretty good.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup
