Install ESX/ESXi 4.x on a HP DL 380 G4

Hi all

I am trying to buy some HP Servers for a test lab on ebay. We can buy some good servers on ebay.

My question is, is HP DL 380 G4 fully supported on 4.0 or 4.1?

I have install many ESX on 3.x with no problems, but since VMware is always chaging the HCL suport list, i will like to know if anyone have this installed(production or for testing) with 4.x.

Since I never installed the DL 380 G4 with 4.x, I don't want to buy 2 servers that I cannot install and make some test labs.

Thank you

The DL360/DL380 models are supported for ESX(i) 4.x starting with Generation 5 .

I have a G4 model in my lab with ESXi 4.0 running, however this is unsupported and also limited to 32 bit guests, since the G4 does not support VT.

Hi JailBreak,

The HP DL 380 G4 is not officially supported on 4.0 or 4.1 (see VMware Compatibility Guide).

Apparently, some of our colleagues installed 4.0 successfully, but not 4.1. Have a look here.

Hope it helps.

Hi

Thank You for the reply

Well 4.0 is not so bad, but will like to test in this lab some features in 4.1 Smiley Sad

Maybe I will try some Dell. They are cheap also. Anyone as experience with Dell?? With some old Dell installing into the 4.1?

Thank You

Greets,

My whole test lab is Dell.

Currently my 2900 and 2950 run ESXi 4.1 with all support except for FT which needs the newer processors.

My two 1850s run ESXi 4.1 just fine, however since they're not VT enabled Xeons, they are limited to running 32bit OS's. As far as running ESXi 4.1 with all features (except FT) they are fine for a test environment.

The price difference between the two generations is shrinking now. Hold out for 2900 series if you can, but you can buy 2800 series for dead cheap now. RAM is a bit expensive for the 1850 since it maxes out at 16GB and the current ebay price is about $450.

The 2900 and 2950 max out at 48 and 32gb respectively. My current lab has 24gb in each.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I seen some Dell Poweredge 850 Dual Core 3.0Ghz 64bit Server, do you have any? This work fine with 4.1? Or have any other issues?
