What to do when copying your VM from one location to another

hi Guys,

need some help.

I have a copy of my windows virtual machine on my external hard drive and a copy on the C:/ drive.

I renamed the one on the C drive and copied the one from the external to the C drive.

I did most of my work on the VM on the external drive and wanted to replaced the one on the C drive.

I ran the one on my C drive(previously from the external drive) and when it open i saw that all the work i did was gone.

Is it possible that the moving of the Vm from my external to my C drive has something to do with it/

Please help.

Welcome to the community.

Which product are you using? VMware Server, Workstation or Player?

The VM has some kind of snapshot?

Have you copied and restored the entire VM folder?

Hi,

If you have moved the entire folder that contained the VM then you should not lose any data. I would suggest the following

1. Power on the VM you have on your external drive to make sure that all your changes and data are still as expected.

2. Power down the VM and then copy the entire folder that contains the VM to a folder on your local C:\

3. Open the application you are using to run your VM and open the VM (using he vmx file) from the folder you have just copied to your C:\

4. Power on the VM and when prompted select 'I have moved....'

You should now be running the VM that used to be on your external without any issues.
