very slow storage vmotion problem

Hello,

I got a problem with storage vmotion in a costumer environment. He have set up 5 x ESXi 4.1 260247 Enterprise plus and we used storage vmotion to change some SAN volumes and the speed is quite bad

Our SAN is a Clariion EMC CX4-120 (FC 4GB)

We are trying to migrate a 5GB disk VM and took very long (50gb ~10h). The first 18% are ok, but then the process stucks on "Migrating the active state of the Virtual Machine".

We have 8M as block size on the LUN.

The funny thing about this environment is that I have setup anohter one very similar and storage vmotion works like a charm. The only thing that is differente is tha array at the backend but that's it.

Any ideas?

well there might be some issues with your setup that includes

1) the Destination LUN may have not so much IOPS/$ which result in slowdown the performance of Storage Vmotion

2) Storage vmotion of vm between two different LUN is mapped through Virtual Center.

a) there is a possibility that Virtual Center Might be heavily loaded which may slow down the performance

b) Check DNS Entries for ESXi Servers and Virtual Center. Incorrect entries might create issues

c) DNS Entries are Case sensative w.r.t VMware ESX & Virtual Center Envoirnment

3) Try to use vCLI interface for Storage vmotion.

hope it helps

Hi,

Another thing to check would be if there are any LUNs trespass on the array.

I encountered such "slowness" in disk performance with our EMC NS-480. Turned out the datastore's managed paths policy had to be MRU.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,

That is interesting now ... It appears that there were a few LUNs trespass on the array according to the storage guy. Now we have fixed as PSP policy since this array is an A/A. Not sure why is doing trespass since I was under the impression that a trespass is done by the array itself when one of the SP goes down!!!????

Any ideas?

Hi Gonzalez,

For my case, the array was an Active/Passive, so the PSP had to be MRU. And that's where the Storage guy & myself noticed the LUNs trespass.

For your case, I can't say for sure, coz any of the PSP should work for Active/Active arrays.

Was the active path (target) via the active SP?
