ok,,
I have seen this before, but I am drawing a blank, error is Cannot contact the specified host,,, The host may not be available on the network, a network config problem may exist,,, I have vCenter 4.1 ..trying to add an ESXi Server. ESXi Server is registered in DNS and nslookup returns the correct IP. I can ping the ESXi server from vCenter with FQDN or IP. I can add the ESXi Server to vCenter by using the IP.. But, we want to add it via the FQDN. What am I missing Thanks
see if this helps
On the Yellow console screen of the ESXi Host
If you do a "Test Management network", does the host resolve its own FQDN to IP?
try to ping the vCenter FQDN from the host
Aslo you can try to restart the management agents form the console under the troubleshooting tab
Other things that comes to mind.
- Make sure Vcenter server have no IP entries in the host file
- Did you try to add by esxi01.domain.com and just esxi01?
Hope it helps

I came in this morning and I was able to add the host...
I may have fat fingered the name or was too tired last evening:^0
Anyway, it works,,
I added it but it looks like the licenses I was given are evals.:_|
vCenter has a note in the lower right corner – License Period 179 days remaining.
ESXi shows – ESXi 4.1.0 260247 | Evaluation (44 days remaining)
Hi,
The host must to be capable to reach the vCenter Server using the FQDN, so make sure the ESXi have the DNS settings well configured.
