Number of vCPU for SAP Business Objects Edge BI 3.1

Hello All,

We are building a new system to host SAP Business Objects Edge BI 3.1 on a Windows 2008 Guest on an ESX4. The server will host only the BO application, the back end database is on a separate Oracle server. Potentially up to 300 simultaneaous users may be running queries and SAP are reccomending that for a physical server at least 6 or more CPUs are required. Genarally the reccomendation for VMWare Guests is normally no more then 2 vCPU for multithredded applcations such as BO.

Does anyone have any reccomendations regarding the number of vCPUs to assign to a Business Objects application server?

Thanks

Welcome to the community

Seeing that no one has responded in over a day, I thought it might be worth telling you what my last SAP deployment looked like regarding BO

We got all the SAP VM specifications from the SAP guys so obviously the send overkill specs, which was 6 vCPUs for the BO Web Server and 8vCPUs for the BO Database server. I would say it will be safe to start with less and add later on as you see fit.

But i think the biggest problem is the SAP support. I am not sure, but SAP support might be depended on the VM spec and if it adheres to the minimum hardware requirements before they can support you. So it might be worth finding out what the SAP Support criteria is

Normal best practice for provisioning any VMs is too begin with 1vCPU. Seeing how SAP desires you to use a "fixed" method would only make me wonder why? As current we do not provision our SAP servers wtih no more than a max of 4vCPU and that is only if they have a heavy load.

Thanks for the replies. This confirms my thinking, start with 2 vCPU as it is a multithreaded application and add more if required. We have a support call open with SAP but no definitive answer as yet.
