vCentre license for Disaster Recovery site using VMWare CRM

Hello,

Want to know if I can utilise the same vCentre server licenses plus licenses of all the other VMWare utilities like vMotion, HA, DRS and the ESX host licenses for my Disaster Recovery Site using the VMWare Site Recovery Manager. All my servers at the disaster recovery site will be switched off and will only be powered on during the course of a disaster at the production site and because of this am asking whether we can use the same VMWare licenses at the disaster recovery site.

I know VMWare licensing is per processor based and also the number of servers at the disater recovery site will be less compared to the production site but all the funtionalities.

Please assist me in licensing.

Regards

Nikhil

Sorry for the bad news but along with SRM licenses the vCenter and ESX servers at a recovery site are also supposed to be licensed independently of the production servers.

Hi,

Why is the case, is there any document from VMWare that say you need to license also your disaster recovery site separately? I need some justification as am required to submit costs for a project.

I cannot tell you why VMware licenses products like they do, ask your account manager. This topic has been covered extensively in this forum, the authoritative sources is referenced below.

I believe it is because they way SRM is designed so your DR site does not need to sit idle and powered off but can be activiely in use and when a disaster occurs part of the DR response s to power down unnecessary VMs at the DR site -
