Always on - or not!!

VMware View 4.0.1

XP VMs

PCOIP protocol.

option is checked in vmware view to "ensure VM is always powered on"

However when user selects shutdown in XP, the VM does not power back on automatically.

Must be done manually.

Any suggestions??

I would take a look at the pool configuration. Edit the config, go to provisioning settings, and open the advanced settings. There is a place in there to set how many desktops should be available. You may be able to modify this setting to make sure that your desktops are always powered on.

Nope, did not work unfortuately.

Have a Test pool with two VMs.

Edited advanced settings to have:

Minimum No. of desktops: 2

Maximum No. of desktops: 2

Available desktops: 2

Logged onto a VM -> shutdown VM through XP -> VM failed to power back on automatically.

Any other suggestions.

Is everything setup correctly between View and the vCenter server? Does the user setup for vCenter connectivity have rights to power on a machine ( if it didn't I would imagine an error would be flagged in vCenter). Do you see anything happen in vCenter?

I hate to resurrect a few months old thread, but we're experiencing the same issue:

VMware View with PCoIP

Manual Persistent Desktop Pool

Set to Always On

OS: Windows XP SP3

If the user initiates a shutdown from Windows, the virtual machine does not get power-on automatically, despite the pool being configured for "Always On".

There are no events in the Vmware View Server log, nor in the Vmware vSphere client that would help me resolve this (nothing gets triggered, no alerts, warning, failures, etc).

the always on is only set for the idle sessions and whether to shut them down and etc.

once the user has initiated a shutdown, the VM will not be powered up until the desktop pool has run out of ready virtual desktop. In Vmware View 4.5 you can define what's the minimum ready desktop value (you can increase this to ensure that all are power up).

Those minimum, maximum, and available options are available in earlier versions of View too. I would read the power policy section of the admin guide to get a better understand. https://www.vmware.com/pdf/view40_admin_guide.pdf. Starts at page 179 or 180.
